Horse Racing – Pontefract & Kempton Wednesday 10th June Tips and Betting Preview

More and more meetings are getting added to the racing schedule in the UK with each day that passes, and on Wednesday there are four cards in operating throughout the afternoon and into the evening, as well as one in Ireland.

We have gone through all five meetings and there are two bets we like, one in the afternoon at Pontefract and then we head to the all-weather for another punt at Kempton early in the evening.

A marathon trip of 2 miles 1 furlong sees 11 head to the start for this really competitive looking Class 4 handicap where there are plenty with chances.

Oleg is the favourite after winning in a lower grade at Southwell last time out.  He’s gone up 12lbs in the handicap for a hard held 5 length victory but the concern for me would be the change of surface and the fast ground.   Ginistrelli and Sassie look competitive on firm but, like the favourite, there are some ground concerns, so, of the market leaders, Anyonecanhaveitall looks the most solid.

Betting

However, Seinesational looks the one to be on and seems to hold a great chance off a mark of 83.  He ended last terms in disappointing fashion but his last 2 runs can be forgiven, once as he encountered slow ground on the all weather and the other when outclassed in the Cesarewitch.  He’s better judged on his efforts before that when 2 lengths 4th in a Class 3 and 3 lengths 3rd in a Class 2, both off 85.  Down 2lbs & dropped in grade, this dour stayer must have a top chance on ground that suits & on a track where you need to get every inch of the trip.   He undoubtedly brings the best form of any into this horse having finished a neck 2nd in a big field handicap at Glorious Goodwood last summer.   A repeat of that would see him as the most likely winner.

Tips

PLACED – Back Seinesational (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 10.00 Paddy Power BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)

This 7 furlong Class 4 handicap is the most interesting contest of the day.  There are 11 runners expected.  Gossiping won last week here in a lower grade but is now 4lbs higher whilst Tintoretto also won his last start, again at this track off 4lbs lower.

What intrigues me here is the pace.  It’s almost impossible to call who will make the running as there are 6 of these that like to go from the front.  A breakneck pace is almost assured and, if there’s a battle on, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this race fall apart inside the final furlong when the pace collapses.  That leads me to supporting one that, hopefully, will be held up.

Betting

That horse, at current odds of 33/1 & the rank outsider, is Rectory Road.  I’m well aware that this could be a silly bet but, on second look, the chances of this decent 4 year old have been overlooked.  He’s a Kempton specialist having raced here for 7 of his career starts, it’s also the scene of his only 2 wins to date.  He races off a mark of 80 so my interest is piqued in that he’s recorded RPRs in excess of his mark on 6 of his 7 Kempton starts.

The only disappointment was last time when a change of tactics were deployed & he attempted to make it all.  That change didn’t work & surely he’ll revert to his normal hold up style, especially given the pace in this field as well as his wide draw in 10.   At the back end of last year, he was 3rd & 4th here off marks 3lbs & 5lbs higher than today’s; both those races were in a higher grade too.   Down in mark, eased in grade & with the pace / shorter trip likely to help him settle (he can pull hard), it wouldn’t be the biggest shock to see him involved in the finish.

Tips

Back Rectory Road (e/w) for a 0.5/10 stake at 34.00 William Hill BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)
