Against all the odds we have a deciding match in the T20 series between India and West Indies, a clash which takes place in Mumbai, a perfect setting for what has been a very enjoyable series so far, and which should continue to be the case on Wednesday.
India will have been disappointed not to seal the spoils at the first time of asking, but they have a second chance to get over the line here. West Indies did brilliantly to earn themselves a shot at glory, and will be eager to take it.
India
We will see a little of what we can expect from India in terms of their potential in the World T20 next year here. This is a proper contest with something on the line at the end of it, so with that in mind it might be that losing the previous game has actually had a positive to it, not that they will have wanted to lose of course. It is fair to say it wasn’t their best performance on Sunday, with all three facets leaving plenty to be desired.
The big thing that has been noticeable in the series so far has been how poorly India have fielded. They have dropped a few catches and have paid the price with West Indies running up a huge score in one game and winning the other. I’m going to cut their bowlers a little slack as conditions haven’t helped them and they are not going to here either. They need to improve but it would be wrong to be too harsh on them.
West Indies
We all knew going into this series that the West Indies had the potential to be extremely dangerous, and for once that promise and potential has been turned into displays on the pitch. They have been dismissive with the bat, and while they struggled with the ball in the opening match, mostly due to the dew, they showed their qualities in that department in the second game, and you write them off in this decider at your peril.
Importantly for West Indies, the majority of their key players have made an impact in this series. There is still more to come from them too with one or two yet to make their mark, but that is never a bad thing. It is interesting that this decider is at the Wankhede. Not only is it the home of three of the West Indies side in the IPL but it is probably the ground which suits their style the most of any on offer in India.
Team News
India played three spinners in the previous match but you would think that would be a folly way to go about things at the Wankhede so it might be time for Mohammad Shami to be unleashed on the series for one of them.
There is no need for West Indies to change a winning side unless they want to give those who haven’t had an outing a chance to shine before they embark on the ODIs. I don’t see that happening though, especially as Fabian Allen still isn’t fit.
Betting
I’m looking forward to what should be a cracking conclusion to what has been a very entertaining series and I’m going to go into it with one bet for the deciding match. It will as no surprise to anyone that it does not come in the match betting though. We see time and time again that the Wankhede is near on impossible to defend and both matches in this series have been won easily by the chasing side.
The bet I like is over 15.5 sixes. When you think West Indies on their own have clobbered 15 and 12 sixes in this series to date this line is clearly on the low side. Then add into the mix that this is probably the best batting wicket of the three and the smallest ground of them as well and the potential for plenty of sixes is right there. India smacked a dozen sixes in that first game too so it isn’t all West Indies when it comes to six hitting. Lendl Simmons, Evin Lewis and Kieron Pollard rank right up there when it comes to giving it a bit of Reggie Biffington and this is their home ground in the IPL so they’ll know it well. I’m all over the over here.
