IPL 2023 – Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Capitals Tips and Betting Preview

The bottom two teams meet in the Indian Premier League on Monday when the competition returns to Hyderabad as the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Delhi Capitals reach the halfway mark of their IPL 2023 season.

These two teams have played 12 matches between them this season and have three wins in total and whoever loses this one will be in danger of being cut adrift from the top four, and would have some serious work to do in the second part of the campaign.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The season has been a bit like the entrants into Noah’s Ark for the Sunrisers Hyderabad so far because everything have come in twos. They opened up with a couple of losses before suggesting that they might be a competitive force with a pair of wins. They now head into this one off the back of successive wins so they will need to bounce back like they did the last time they had back-to-back defeats. If they do that they will latch onto the chasing pack for the top four.

I think what we are seeing from the Sunrisers is that if they are going to be competitive in this tournament then they need their really big, elite players to come to the party. In the two matches that they won Harry Brook made a century in one of them and Marco Jansen took 2-16 from three overs in the other one. This is a team whose Indian players really need to come to the party soon else the campaign could get away from them once again.

Delhi Capitals

After five defeats in their opening five matches to open up the campaign, the only way was up for the Delhi Capitals. To be fair to them, they won on their latest outing but they are probably going to need to find at least six more wins from their last eight and might even need a seventh if they are going to be around when the business end of the tournament gets played so they will have a lot of work to do in order to repair the damage.

If the Capitals are going to play any significant part in this campaign then they are going to need to find a batting combination which works and scores runs. Only once in six outings have they cleared 165 runs and in a competition where the rules are making it a higher scoring league, that just isn’t going to cut the mustard. In the main their bowlers are going along ok in comparison to the league average but they haven’t scored nearly enough runs.

Key Players

The teams who are succeeding in this tournament have a tone setter at the top of the order and if the Sunrisers Hyderabad are to get themselves back into contention this season then they will need the best of Harry Brook here.

Only two men have scored more than 100 runs in the six matches that the Delhi Capitals have played this season and one of those is Axar Patel who bats well down the order. David Warner needs someone to partner him at the top of the innings and that might be Phil Salt.

Betting

The run line for this match is up at 340.5 and while the trend of this tournament with the new rules is a lot of high scoring matches. I’m not convinced this one will follow that narrative. The reason I say that is because this is a match both of them need to win and there is a little bit extra pressure on the two teams as a result of that. The other reason why I think that might be a little high is these two just aren’t particularly great batting units.

Delhi have only scored more than 165 once in their six matches this season and Hyderabad have only surpassed that total twice in their six games and one of those was at Eden Gardens which has been particularly high scoring so almost doesn’t count. When you look at 340 runs if the team batting first were to surpass the half mark of 170 and push towards 200 then a team who isn’t batting particularly well is going to have to throw the bat at things and potentially increase their risk and it is never bad thing to have that scenario onside. The other thing to factor in is Delhi have a decent bowling attack so when you put it all together the under looks a good bet here.
