Two sides who haven’t made the start to the season they would have been searching for meet to open up the latest round of MLS matches on Friday night when the Montreal Impact head to California to take on the Los Angeles Galaxy.
In the eight matches the two sides have played this season they have one win between them so confidence is likely to be low on both sides of the halfway line in this match which adds to the importance and intrigue of the contest.
Los Angeles Galaxy
There was a time when LA Galaxy were the side to beat in MLS but those days are behind us and with Bruce Arena now in charge of the US national team much has changed in California heading into the season and that has shown in the first month of the campaign. Injuries aren’t helping the Galaxy but they look like a side who are finding themselves at the minute.
Galaxy have played four and won just one of those matches which came against a relatively poor Real Salt Lake side but as players begin to return you would think they will improve. When a side loses players like Steven Gerrard and Landon Donovan from the end of last season it will automatically take them some time to come to life.
Montreal Impact
There looks like there has been a clear hangover from the end of last season for the Montreal Impact. That often happens with sides who come so close to glory but they have been back long enough now to put that behind them and move on with getting back into the mix to have another shot at the title.
Montreal have some really top attacking players and that is played out in their results where they have scored twice in two of their last three matches but they are yet to keep a clean sheet this season which could be a concern. They have drawn their last three matches though so they don’t lack for spirit and competitiveness.
Team News
Gyasi Zardes is back in the Los Angeles squad now after his early season injury but the Galaxy could still be without Robbie Rogers and Seb Lletget. Giovani dos Santos and Ashley Cole played last week and should be in again.
Montreal Impact have upgraded the status of Ignacio Piatti and Laurent Ciman to questionable with the latter having a chance to start. Piatti could be fit for a place on the bench.
Betting
Montreal are proving hard to beat at the minute while in their four matches so far Los Angeles haven’t really looked like beating anyone half decent so I’m quite surprised to see the home side so short for this match.
Montreal Impact might be lacking a bit of quality in the absence of Piatti but they don’t lack for pace so they can play on the counter attack. We’ve seen the Impact score goals and with it be hard to beat and I fancy they can get something here from an out of sorts Galaxy side who are taking time to adjust under a new regime.
