MLS 2017 – Philadelphia Union vs Columbus Crew Betting Preview

We have one midweek match in the MLS this week and it is a quick return fixture between the Philadelphia Union and Columbus Crew. These two won’t need to think too far back for their last meeting as it took place just four days ago when the Crew won 1-0.

That was Columbus’ first win in four against the Union and they will be looking to build on that here while Philadelphia will be looking to get their own back. Columbus will move into fourth with a win while Philadelphia have to win to keep in touch with the top six.

Philadelphia Union

Defeat on Saturday will have been tough to take for the Union but in many ways they can take something from the match because they were without some key players and performed well but ultimately still lost the game. They will not want back to back defeats at this stage of the season so this an important match.

The bright side for Philadelphia is that by and large their home form is good. They have won four of their last five matches at the Talen Energy Stadium so they should get good vibes when they come out of the tunnel for this one. A win here would keep them just about in touch with those above them.

Columbus Crew

I think given the absences that Philadelphia had won Saturday, Columbus Crew would have been disappointed to win the game so narrowly but the important thing was that they won. The Crew have previous when it comes to hitting form at this stage of the season and they have the platform for that again.

Columbus are not necessarily the best on their travels with just three wins and seven losses from their road matches this season but the only time they have really been hammered was when they went to Toronto and there is no shame in that. I would expect the Crew to be competitive at the very least here.

Team News

Philadelphia Union remain without their standout keeper Andre Blake. He will be playing for Jamaica in the Gold Cup final. Chris Pontius could be playing against him in that final while Fafa Picault and CJ Sapong are carrying injuries.

Columbus Crew will be missing Ben Swanson and Federico Higuain once again and Niko Hansen is rated as questionable for the contest. Justin Meram has a point to prove after missing the All-Stars squad somewhat controversially.

Betting

I took Columbus Crew in this match at the weekend and I am interested in them again here. Philadelphia are struggling for goals right now. They have only scored seven goals in their last eight matches, three of which came in the one game. With Sapong and Picault, scorers of four of those seven, potentially out injured here it is hard to see where a Union goal comes from.

Columbus go into this match off the back of successive clean sheets and have only conceded three in their last four. With their attacking unit usually reliable for goals I think if there is a winner in this one it could well be the visitors. I’ll take them to complete a quick double over the Union.
