MLS 2018 – Minnesota United vs New England Revolution Betting Preview

There is one match in the MLS this midweek with the league throwing up a cross-Conference clash between Minnesota United and the New England Revolution. This one is actually an important match for both sides.

Minnesota are clinging to the chance of a playoff place by their fingernails but can enhance their claims with a win here while New England will be looking to strengthen their top six hopes in the Eastern Conference with a victory in this one.

Minnesota United

We are well into the MLS season now and we pretty much know what we are going to get from Minnesota United. They either win or they lose and generally they win in high scoring contests and get thumped when they are beaten. There is not usually an in between with them and it might well be that inability to grind out a result when they are not playing well that hampers them.

Generally Minnesota’s wins come at home. They have picked up six of their seven wins at home and have only lost three times in 10 on their own patch which will be encouraging for them here. They will need to find some form and victories on the road if they are to reach a first postseason campaign but that is for later in the week.

New England Revolution

The Revolution have made their way up to fifth in the Eastern Conference table which is a pretty good effort considering they lost their playmaker and best player halfway through the campaign in Lee Nguyen. Consistency has been an issue for Brad Friedel’s men but if they can maximise this transfer window there is no reason why they can’t consolidate their top six spot.

New England have a couple of games in hand of a number of sides in the East, this being one of them, so they have the chance to really stake their claim over the coming weeks. If they are to guarantee a spot in the postseason they may well need to find a way to pick up points on the road. They have only won one road game from their seven although in fairness they have only lost two of them.

Team News

Minnesota United have a few injury issues that are ongoing at the minute. Ethan Finlay and Kevin Molino are long-term victims while Abu Danladi and Eric Miller are questionable for this one. That leaves Darwin Quintero as the main man.

New England head to Minneapolis with three players suspended in the form of Cristian Penilla, Luis Caicedo and Antonio Delamea but in the main they have avoided injuries for this contest.

Betting

The obvious bet here would be for the overs in goals given how frequent they come along for Minnesota United but a 3.25 line which is pushing towards 3.5 is bordering on the extreme a little too much for my liking I must admit.

I thought about chancing Minnesota given their wonderful home record but New England don’t lose very often and having tasted defeat at the weekend they may well go into being tough to beat mode so all things being equal there isn’t a huge amount that I like here so I’ll wait until the weekend.
