The Major League Soccer playoffs resume on Sunday evening when the first leg of the Conference Finals are played out as we take a step closer to finding out just who will compete in the MLS Cup final next month.

The four sides remaining in the competition are a two-legged tie away from making it to the showdown game and this first leg offers the chance to take the upper hand into the second game so expect an extremely competitive evening of football.

Atlanta United vs New York Red Bulls (22.00)

The top two in the Eastern Conference will do battle for the Conference title and the right to host the MLS Cup final when Atlanta United host the New York Red Bulls with the first leg coming from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Red Bulls go into this match knowing they won both meetings in the regular season and indeed Atlanta have never beaten NYRB in a regular season contest. That should give the away side plenty of confidence but positivity is something that the Five Stripes rarely lack and although that record is not ideal I would be surprised if they let it concern them too much.

I’ve a feeling both sides might come out and look to win the tie right here. Atlanta will want a lead to take to New York with them but if New York can win this first leg it will be almost impossible for Atlanta to turn things around next week. Both teams are naturally attacking teams so over 2.75 goals appeals to me here.

Portland Timbers vs Sporting Kansas City (00.30)

The first leg of the Western Conference final comes from Providence Park as the Portland Timbers look to take a step towards the MLS Cup final when they play host to the table toppers Sporting Kansas City.

This tie looks a very tight one to me and I don’t think there will be a huge amount in it at any point in the entire tie. Portland are tough to beat at home while Kansas City are tough to beat anywhere so this first leg doesn’t look like one to bet on at the outset. Hopefully the result of it sets it up nicely so that we can get stuck into the second leg but for now I’ll sit this tie out.
