MLS 2020 – New York City FC vs Columbus Crew Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Major League Soccer regular season action comes thick and fast from here on in as the league look to catch up having lost the best part of five months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That means we have another match on Monday night when New York City FC host the Columbus Crew in a key Eastern Conference clash.

These two met to open their campaigns back at the beginning of March but I don’t think too many would have thought that by the time they met again one would be bottom of the table and the other at the top. That is the case ahead of this one though.

Where to watch

The match will be televised live in the UK on the Sky Main Event and Sky Football channels. The build up to the contest begins at midnight with the clash kicking off shortly after that. As ever it will also be able to be watched on the live streams at bookmaker websites.

New York City FC

Given how good New York City FC have been since they came into MLS, it is a big surprise that they currently sit bottom of the Eastern Conference and with just one win to their name in six matches. Perhaps more of a concern is fact that they have only scored two goals in their six regular season games and already they face something of a battle just to make it to the postseason, even allowing for the fact that extra teams will be involved in that this term.

The obvious thing that needs to change if the Yankee Stadium occupants are to turn their fortunes around is they have to find a way to score goals more regularly. Their goal output, or lack of one, is a surprise actually because they have some decent offensive options and have a coach who is pretty well known for playing attacking football, but for whatever reason it hasn’t happened yet. That needs to change fast.

Columbus Crew

If New York City FC are having their struggles there has been no such problem for the Columbus Crew. They were well fancied to be the team to beat ahead of the season beginning and that is exactly how it is beginning to play out, as they have picked up five wins and a draw from their six regular season matches. The only surprise so far is that they didn’t go on and win the MLS is Back tournament. That might only spur them on to make no mistake when it comes to the MLS.

The Crew have been in formidable form to begin the season. They are averaging two goals per match and in the six regular season games they have played and only conceded once. That sort of record is going to see you right and the scary thing for the rest of the competition is that there might still be more to come from Caleb Porter and his charges. At this stage of the campaign, the Crew very much look like the team to beat.

Betting

I’m very surprised to see New York City FC as the favourites in this match. I’m not really seeing what they have got going for them here. Perhaps if they had home advantage on their side then there would be a case for them being favoured but they don’t have that because the Yankees have taken control of their home ground so this is being played at Red Bull Arena. They are no strangers to being kicked out of Yankee Stadium towards the end of a season but their results aren’t great when that happens.

I’m fine with the fact that New York are the favourites here because it is the Columbus Crew that I fancy to win the game so the fact we can back them at a decent price and have a bit of draw cover in these slightly more uncertain times is definitely no bad thing. The Crew look unstoppable at the minute and have already beaten New York City this season. They are looking strong at both ends of the pitch and look a great bet on the draw no bet market here.
