MLS 2020 Play-offs – Seattle Sounders vs Minnesota United Tips, TV and Betting Preview

We will find out who the Columbus Crew will host in the MLS Cup Final in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the current champions Seattle Sounders host dangerous contenders Minnesota United in the Western Conference Final.

Both these teams have seen off dangerous opposition in this play-off run to make it through to this Western final but in terms of overall postseason experience you would have to suggest this is something of a mismatch in the Sounders’ favour.

Seattle Sounders

The Seattle Sounders have enjoyed home comforts in this postseason so far and they will hope to do so one last time before heading off on their travels for the MLS Cup Final at the weekend. In order to get there they are going to need to see off Minnesota United, a team they have never lost to in MLS since the Loons came into the league. I regularly state that we are used to seeing Seattle at their best at this time of the season and that still rings true.

The obvious thing about the Seattle Sounders is their front three which is full of quality. Jordan Morris, Raul Ruidiaz and Nico Lodeiro can all win matches on their own and have done in their successful play-off campaigns in the past. The area of concern comes in the form of their defence which can give up a lot of chances, although that is balanced out with Stefan Frei behind them who seems to regular step up to the mark at this time of year.

Minnesota United

Considering they have only been in the league for three seasons the job that Adrian Heath has done with Minnesota United deserves a lot of credit. Each year they have improved and now they have a genuine shot at winning MLS. Their achievements and progression hasn’t really got the attention that it should have done because of the feats of Atlanta United before them but make no mistake about it, the Loons are a serious side here.

What I like about Minnesota is the amount of attacking options that they have. I’m not just talking about strikers either. While they are loaded with them and have a very good number 10 in behind them, they have attacking full-backs who can bomb on because they know the likes of Ozzie Alonso will be there to cover for them. When you think they have achieved what they have this season without Luis Amarilla for the most part their success is even more pronounced.

Betting

This should be a great conclusion to the Western Conference season as we have two of the best teams in the league to watch. Minnesota United have a good defensive record on paper in terms of the fact that they have kept three clean sheets in a row and seven out of their last 10 matches but the chances they have coughed up in this postseason have been beyond belief and they are not going to keep getting away with them. What they are likely to keep doing though is scoring goals. They have Kevin Molino in terrific form and Emanuel Reynoso who is up there with the best creative talents in the league.

Seattle Sounders actually concede goals like a defence as weak as theirs should do but as I highlighted earlier that is more than made up for with the quality of their front three, who can tear any team apart and win any game they play for their side. Seattle are also very comfortable at CenturyLInk Field so this one has all the hallmarks of an absolute belter. I expect goals. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see extra time and penalties so I’m just going to back over 3 goals and sit back and enjoy a great game.
