MLS 2022 – Sunday 6th March Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The second weekend of action in the new MLS 2022 season concludes with a double header on Sunday evening as four sides take to the field once again to continue their opening to another campaign of which hopes are high.

Both these matches are live on TV for those of us in the UK who enjoy our MLS fix, although you’ll probably need to be a night owl and have Monday off if you are to watch the second of the games live such is the lateness of the kick off.

Austin FC vs Inter Miami (21.00 – Sky Sports Football)

The opening match of the evening sees a side in either Conference meeting when Austin FC look to back up their emphatic opening win when they host an Inter Miami side who will be looking to build on an encouraging draw first time out.

I think it is fair to say that even though these two are both fairly new to MLS, they are going in different directions at the minute. Austin FC made big strides with their squad in the close season whereas Inter Miami have let a lot of big hitters leave either permanently or on loan and don’t look nearly as strong as their opponents here. That can be shown in the fact that the Texans have their full complement of three DPs whereas Inter Miami currently only have one around. There is a youthfulness to this Inter Miami side at the minute but you sense before the transfer window closes they’ll still need to do some work on the squad so it might not be until a little deeper into the season where we see them at their best, although their defensive performance last week will at least have encouraged them. Austin FC had a brilliant win last week but we should probably hold off on getting too carried away with that because it was against an FC Cincinnati side who continue to look a bit of a mess. They will be expected to push on this term with the work they have done on the squad, particularly the depth of it, and with home advantage I do think they’ll have too much for a weak looking Miami side.

Los Angeles FC vs Portland Timbers (03.00 – Free Sports)

The second match of the night sees two of the best in the Western Conference going at it when Los Angeles FC look to make it successive victories to start their season when they host the 2021 MLS Cup finalists Portland Timbers.

LAFC went into the season under a bit of pressure after a disappointing campaign last term but we were immediately reminded that when Carlos Vela plays well they naturally play well as a team and if he is on it here the home side will be tough to beat. The Timbers showed their worth last weekend too though when they held the Supporters’ Shield holders New England Revolution, so we should be set up for a great match with the talent which will be on the pitch here. If I was picking a winner here then the Vela influence would lead me towards Los Angeles but they look fairly short to be getting stuck into against a competent outfit. I’d rather watch and observe this one than have my hard earned riding on it.
