MLS 2023 – LA Galaxy vs St Louis City SC Tips and Betting Preview

The truncated weekend of action in the MLS 2023 season concludes on Sunday night when the Western Conference is in focus as LA Galaxy host the leaders St Louis City SC in a good looking way to round up the latest set of matches.

As is the case with all of the MLS matches this season you will need an MLS Season Pass on Apple TV to get the TV treatment for this match but if you don’t have one of those it can be viewed with most bookmakers. Kick off is shortly after 1am.

LA Galaxy

The Galaxy have been in decent form in MLS recently after a terrible start to the competition. The first third of their campaign was so bad that even with a run of just one defeat in 11 games they sit second from bottom in the Western Conference. Fortunately for the Galaxy, teams outside the top four in this division have stalled so should they win here they would move to within a couple of points of the playoffs with their season very much alive.

The flip side would be that should they lose they would be five points from that position with just eight regular season matches left. We always say that home matches are more significant than away ones in MLS and so that makes this one pretty big for a Galaxy side who have won twice and picked up a creditable draw with Houston since the Leagues Cup break, and for whom big players in the attacking area of the pitch are healthy once again.

St Louis City SC

It is easy to forget that this is the first season in MLS for St Louis City SC such is the impact they have made in it. They have been at the top end of the Western Conference table pretty much all season and can open up a nine point gap in the race for top spot here. That would feel significant with regular season matches running out because Citypark has been one of the tougher places for away teams to win this term so if the West goes through St Louis they are entitled to feel confident of their chances.

St Louis have been good on the eye this season too with their high press and you would imagine they would be able to get the aging part of this LA Galaxy side at it in that regard. City have generally been pretty good at the back this season but when they do get exposed their goals against can come in clusters which is never ideal. On the whole though this is a team who are playing well and five away wins suggests they are not scared of anyone on their travels.

Betting

I think we have to approach this match with the expectation of seeing some goals. LA Galaxy are in a position where home draws are of no real use to them and while a draw would be a perfectly acceptable result for St Louis City SC they aren’t a team that plays for draws as evidenced by the fact that they have only had two of them in 27 matches. Ironically one of those was in the reverse meeting between these two but St Louis might still be wondering how they didn’t win that match having had 22 shots in it.

There is no doubt that LA Galaxy have improved as the season has gone on and last week saw a run of six matches with more than 2.5 goals in it come to an end but even then it wasn’t for the lack of trying. St Louis City arrive in Hollywood with a run of six straight matches with three more or goals so I think it is a good idea to expect them to flow here. Galaxy have managed to avoid Dejan Joveljic being called up by Serbia while nobody has left the St Louis camp which should make for a cracking finale to the weekend.
