MLS Cup Playoffs 2021 – Sunday 21st November Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The MLS Cup Playoffs continue for the 2021 season on Sunday night when another two matches take place over the course of what should be an evening full of entertaining football as four of the best teams to watch in the league look to take a step closer to the MLS Cup final.

We have one match in the Eastern Conference and then one in the Western Conference to enjoy and if we get anything like the drama and tension we saw on Saturday night then we are sure to be fully entertained.

New York City FC vs Atlanta United (20.00 – Sky Football & Free Sports)

The action begins in the Eastern Conference where the teams which finished fourth and fifth will meet when New York City FC host Atlanta United at Yankee Stadium as the former champions make a tip they hope will see them move closer to regaining the title they won in 2018.

Matches between these two tend to be pretty close affairs and I’m not expecting this one to be much different. Both head into it in relatively good form so I would wager that the winner will be the one who holds their nerve the best. If I had to pick a winner I’d probably go with Atlanta as I think they might just have that extra bit of quality in the key areas which could unlock the door in a tight match. Being away from home they might have less pressure on them too. They are not confident views though so I’m happy to leave this first game alone.

Portland Timbers vs Minnesota United (22.30 – Sky Football & Free Sports)

The Western Conference match on Sunday night comes from Providence Park where the former champions Portland Timbers go up against the relatively new to the league Minnesota United in what promises to be a tasty clash.

Portland are certainly no strangers to the playoffs and they tend to go deep then they are in them, although they were early casualties last season when FC Dallas went to Providence Park and beat them. It should be said that the Timbers had won the MLS is Back Tournament prior to that and had their Champions League spot wrapped up. Minnesota United made it all the way to the Western Conference final last season and will be hoping to take another step closer to emulating that here. I hope they manage that as I backed Minnesota before a ball was kicked this season.

Minny head to Portland knowing they have won seven and drawn the other of the last eight matches between the two teams. That will give them a lot of confidence and so I wouldn’t want to be on the Timbers as a result of that. I’m happy to let my Minnesota outright ride but I do expect there to be goals in this match. There generally is between these two teams and we only need to look back to ‘Decision Day’ to see how crazy matches involving Minnesota can get pretty quickly. Portland are no strangers to high scoring clashes so over 2.75 goals looks decent enough to me here.
