As ever Sunday finishes in the NFL with the Sunday Night Football which this week comes from Ford Field as the New England Patriots travel to motown take on the Detroit Lions in a clash which both sides will want to win after disappointing defeats last time out.
This match sees Detroit head coach Matt Patricia taking on the team where he made his name as defensive co-ordinator for the first time and he could really do with knocking off the man he worked under for so long.
Detroit Lions
It has been a much harder start to the new era than many Detroit Lions fans and personnel expected and it is unlikely to get much easier here too with a clash against a wounded Patriots side who will be eager to make up for their defeat last week. Another reason why it will not be easy is quarterback Matt Stafford is already looking bashed up.
The big surprise for the Lions so far has been how easy their team has been to score on. The New York Jets of all teams piled up the points against them in the opening week of the season and in truth San Francisco didn’t have to work too hard to score last week. Detroit only went down narrowly last week but it took a couple of garbage time scores to restore a semblance of respectability.
New England Patriots
The beaten Super Bowl team from last season New England Patriots have begun this campaign with a win and a loss so they could really do with victory here to keep their ledger above 50% for the season. They were too good for the Houston Texans in the opening game this term but then lost a repeat of the AFC Championship game last week when the Jacksonville Jaguars got the better of them.
To be fair even without Patricia, the Patriots defence has looked solid enough so far this season but they haven’t really fired so much on offense although the suspension to Julian Edelman is not helping with that. They have signed Josh Gordon from the Cleveland Browns ahead of this game and all eyes will be on him to see whether he plays and what sort of impact he has should he feature.

Betting
If there is an advantage that the Detroit Lions have then it could be that if anyone knows how to stop the New England Patriots offense it will be the man who worked on their defence for so long. That said though it is one thing knowing how to stop it and another entirely having the personnel to do it and I’m not convinced the Lions have that.
If anything I would expect the Patriots offense to try and prove that they can get their better of a Patricia defence and as such I’m expecting New England to pile up the points here. It might be that both sides score freely but the total points line looks a touch high in the mid-high 50s. San Francisco and New York Jets have both scored 30 against this Detroit side though and even without Edelman I’ve got to believe the Patriots have enough to torch them too.
