NFL 2018 – New York Giants @ Atlanta Falcons Betting Preview

The last match of what has been a very entertaining week in the NFL comes as always in the Monday Night Football which is an NFC exclusive battle as the Atlanta Falcons play host to the New York Giants at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Both sides went into this season with high hopes but neither have lived up to their own hype or expectation which makes this match a big one for both franchises. To be fair it is bigger for the home side as they still have realistic play-off ambitions.

Atlanta Falcons

When the season began the last thing Atlanta Falcons would have wanted was to be 2-4 after six matches. In fairness they have a few close ones with three of their four defeats by six points or fewer but there has been a clear trend in all of their matches. They are shipping points at a crazy rate and are paying the price for that late on in games.

Their offense has been playing very well considering the pressure it has been under to pile up the points so they deserve credit for that and they will need to go well again here. The positive is that they have put up 30pts or more in every home match this season and they have enough balance in the offensive side of the ball that they are very tough to contain anywhere let alone on their own turf.

New York Giants

With the draft pick of Saquon Barkley there was a lot of hype around the New York Giants prior to the season commencing as with him and Odell Beckham Jr the Big Blue have two of the best offensive players in the game, but it just has not happened for them and at 1-5 for the year you would have to think the competitive element to their season has gone. If it hasn’t they are drinking at the last chance saloon even allowing for the weakness of the NFC East this season.

To have any chance of making it to the postseason they would have to go 7-3 for their remaining matches and hope that 8-8 is enough to win the division. If they are to do that they need to tighten up their defence. It has been gashed for more than 30pts in the last three matches and with Eli Manning struggling like crazy under center that is a combination that is not going to get the Giants very far at all.

Betting

New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles have all scored more than 30pts against this New York Giants defence in the last three weeks and the Atlanta Falcons offense is no worse than those and in the case of the last two it may well be better. Add into the fact that they are at home and I expect the Falcons to score well in this match.

They have a total points line of 27.5pts which looks very much on the low side to me. Atlanta have put up at least 30pts in all four of their home matches this season and Matt Ryan is very comfortable at home. The Giants have the fewest sacks in the league so Ryan is likely to get plenty of time to pick out his receivers and some clean pockets to work in. That’s a dangerous combination for the Giants defence. I expect at least 28pts out of the Falcons here.
