There is one match left in Week 15 of the NFL season and as always it comes in the Monday Night Football, which this week comes from the Superdome as the New Orleans Saints take on the Indianapolis Colts.
The Saints dropped out of the top two in the NFC when they went down to San Francisco last week so they will be eager for a win here to push for the first round bye in the playoffs. Indianapolis are pretty much playing purely for pride.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints’ defence picked the wrong day to have an absolute shocker against San Francisco 49ers last week, in a match they went down 48-46, a surprise given the suggested qualities of both teams on defence. The one thing that win showed was that there remains plenty of power in the New Orleans offense, and they will be looking to continue to hit full power as we approach the business end of the campaign.
It was a surprise that their defence was so open last week because it has actually been that side of the ball that has been impressing the most so far in this campaign. They will have been challenged during the week to come up and deliver the goods and it will be interesting to see how they respond to that. The other thing New Orleans need to guard against is a drop in intensity now that they have the NFC South already won.
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts were going along nicely enough at 6-4 three weeks ago but three defeats at the wrong time see them head to New Orleans with a 6-7 record and regardless of what they do from here on in, that is not going to be enough to extend their season. To be fair if they end somewhere like 8-8 for the campaign that wouldn’t be the biggest disaster in the world, given how their plans mainly went out the window when Andrew Luck retired so close to the start of it.
There is still a decent roster that the Colts have but some injuries have come at the wrong time and they’ve run into a couple of decent sides in this recent blip they have suffered. After this match their run in doesn’t look too daunting so they can finish their season on a high. It is just all about whether they can motivate themselves well enough on a primetime slot to give of their best, which they’ll need to do just to remain competitive here.
Betting
I expect the New Orleans Saints to get the job done here but whether I want to be backing them to cover near enough a double digit score I’m less convinced. I probably would have done but their defensive display last week puts me right off of that so it is about finding another way to get involved in the match. Given the defensive performance from the Saints last week the over could be the way to progress.
I say that because Indianapolis Colts haven’t really been tight in recent times and their pass defence has been exposed in a major way at times, and we have one of the most accurate passers of all time looking to pick it apart, and the best wide receiver in football at present to feast on it. Indianapolis have points in them as well though so the line of 47.5 looks a little on the low side to me.
