The final match of the NFL regular season forms the Sunday Night Football this week and literally all the marbles in the NFC West are on the line when the Seattle Seahawks take on the San Francisco 49ers in the biggest game of the season so far.
San Francisco go into the match knowing that if they win the route to the Super Bowl in the NFC runs through them as the number one seeds but a loss and they’ll plummet down to number five seeds and will travel to either Dallas or Philadelphia next week while the Seahawks will be celebrating a famous division title. This couldn’t be better poised if it tried.
Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks could be forgiven for bemoaning their luck. In a normal season their 11-4 record may well have been enough to win the division, or at the very least be in control of their own destiny, but this is no ordinary campaign and as such if they want to be at home next week then they are going to have to knock off their rivals for the second time this term, and earn that right themselves. They can’t afford to think that way though.
They have enough on their plate with their injuries to worry about the past. Such is their injury issues, especially in the running back area, that they have had to call Marshawn Lynch out of retirement, with Beast Mode being relaunched in this match. The Seahawks are going to have to up their game in giving Russell Wilson protection too else this might be something of a long night for the home side.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers won their opening eight matches this season but they are only 4-3 since then as injuries have begun to bite and some of their dominance has waned since their bubble was burst. None of that really matters now though. All that matters is these 60 minutes and if they come out on top in them then they will be back on top of the NFC West and at home for every match they have until the Super Bowl.
At their best earlier in the season they were flourishing on offense and barely conceding a point let alone a touchdown. That has all changed with some key injuries on defence but generally class act teams come back to the party when it really counts and that is what I expect to happen here. The 49ers will undoubtedly be boosted by the return of George Kittle and that could end up being the difference in this match.
Betting
I think the sheer nature of this match means that the point line looks on the low side to me at 45.5. Both teams know they are in the playoffs whatever happens so it isn’t like they have to be wary of losing. This is all about claiming the big prize that is dangling at the end of the tunnel and if that means taking offensive risks to put up points, especially when behind, then so be it. There is no difference in losing by 3 or 30 here.
Both these teams have defensive issues at the minute and there is no hiding from that but with George Kittle back the San Francisco offense has a potent weapon even were their ground game not to live up to the heights it has delivered so far this season. The Seattle offense always has a chance with Russell Wilson under center so I’m expecting a higher scoring match than we might have had were this a knockout game for example.
