NFL 2020 – Philadelphia Eagles @ San Francisco 49ers Tips and Betting Preview

As ever a busy Sunday in the NFL concludes with the Sunday Night Football which this week comes from the bay as the San Francisco 49ers host the Philadelphia Eagles in a clash between two sides who have represented the NFC at the Super Bowl in recent seasons.

Both these teams are bashed up with injuries but despite that the 49ers sit with a 2-1 record for the season while the Philadelphia Eagles are 0-2-1 for their campaign after a tie with the Cincinnati Bengals last week.

San Francisco 49ers

When you consider that the San Francisco 49ers have been without some huge players in the first three weeks of the season, the fact that they currently hold a winning record is a testament to the depth they have on their roster. It could be argued that in the two New York teams they haven’t faced anything in those victories but you can only beat what is in front of you and it has been important that they do that because at some point players will return and they’ll benefit from that.

They remain without starting quarterback Jimmy Garropolo and elite pass rusher Nick Bosa for this match but there is a possibility that they could have George Kittle back which would give their offense an extra dimension and a key weapon for second string trigger man Nick Mullens. The 49ers defence has also been hit hard with injuries but they have still been able to get the job done and will need to continue that trend here.

Philadelphia Eagles

It certainly hasn’t been the start to the season that the Philadelphia Eagles wanted but given that they are in the weakest team in football they are certainly not doing much chasing even though they are yet to win a match so far this term. Much like their opponents here they are being hampered heavily by injuries, in their case to a series of wide receivers which is putting pressure on Carson Wentz to be extra pinpoint, and to date he has been found wanting.

While the Eagles offense is really struggling at the minute, their defence has been performing strongly and they are the fifth ranked defence in the league overall heading into the week. What they will hope is that their offense has been quiet through rust with no practice time or pre-season matches to build up for this season. If that is the case then we can expect some natural improvement from them over the weeks to come.

Betting

This isn’t an easy match to bet on with all the injuries that are doing the rounds in these two sides and the trend we’ve seen over the last couple of weeks is that more players are likely to keep on going down as bodies have not built up the stress resistance that is needed to cope with the physicality of the league. In saying that though, the point spread looks a little skewed too much in the favour of the Philadelphia Eagles.

It hasn’t been a great campaign for the Eagles so far but the more work Carson Wentz does with his inexperienced receivers the better their offense should get. They may not need to be brilliant on offense here though as their defence is capable of keeping them in the match. The Eagles are getting a huge 9.5 start at a perfectly acceptable price in this match and while with home advantage you’ve got to think San Francisco might get over the line, with all their injuries they’ll be happy to get in front and run the clock out rather than look to go mad. I don’t expect the Eagles to win here but I do expect them to stay within 9.5.
