The penultimate week of the NFL 2022 regular season begins in Nashville when the Tennessee Titans play host to the Dallas Cowboys in what is a massive Thursday Night Football for both of the teams involved.
They are both sat in second in their respective divisions and only a win here will keep their hopes of winning that particular title alive. Things are more important for the Titans as they are not guaranteed a wildcard spot in the AFC.
Tennessee Titans
A few weeks back it looked like the Tennessee Titans were cruising to another AFC South title and a playoff run which would come off the back of that. Things have taken a serious downturn since then though and they head into this encounter off the back of a five match losing streak which hasn’t just seen them go from 7-3 for the year to 7-8 but has seen them slip to second place in the AFC South behind the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Should Tennessee lose this match they would have to go to Jacksonville and win next week in order to extend their season. A win here would still keep them in the division reckoning but would also have them back in the wildcard contention. It appears as though the Titans might be putting their eggs into next week’s basket though because there are reports Derrick Henry will be rested here. With Ryan Tannehill also missing that would be most of their offense gone.

Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are having a much better season than the Tennessee Titans and have already confirmed that they will be playing football in the postseason. They will be wanting to host a playoff match though and in order to keep their hopes of winning the NFC East title alive which would give them that opportunity they have to win this match. Should they lose they will hand the crown to the Philadelphia Eagles and will need to prepare to win on their travels in the playoffs.
Dallas knocked off the Eagles on Christmas Eve to keep their hopes alive and you sense they are coming to the boil nicely despite that surprise defeat to Jacksonville a couple of weeks ago. That was only their fourth win of the campaign and with Dak Prescott beginning to get up to speed and the two elite running backs showing their worth, Dallas are ticking along nicely. They haven’t quite made the defensive plays they would have wanted in the last two weeks but that defence remains a strong unit.
Betting
With the news that Joshua Dobbs will start at quarterback for the Tennessee Titans in this match this one has suddenly become trickier to bet on. The spread has fallen massively in the favour of the Dallas Cowboys but their aim is simply to win on the road rather than cover two scores but I’m not massively rushing to back a Titans side who might be resting a number of starters because regardless of what happens here they are going to need to win next week to keep their season alive.
Instead, I’ll focus on a Dallas player for my bet and it comes in the form of the passing yards of Dak Prescott which is very low at 226.5 when you consider that Tennessee rank 28th against the pass in the entire league. That is in contrast to the Philadelphia Eagles who Prescott played against last week who had the best passing defence in the league. Prescott produced a season high 347 yards through the air against them. Tennessee do defend the run quite well though so Dallas might need to sit on their passing game a lot more than they might have wanted on the road. With the weapons Prescott has available to him I expect him to cover this line even if Dallas start to run up the score and he is pulled before the end. I like the over here.
