NFL 2022 – Indianapolis Colts @ Denver Broncos Tips and Betting Preview

The NFL season has reached Week 5 and it gets underway with the Thursday Night Football, which this week sees two sides without a winning record going at it when the Denver Broncos host the Indianapolis Colts.

The Broncos are 2-2 after a very edgy beginning to their campaign while the Colts go into this with 1-2 with a tie on top so this is an outing that both teams will be extremely eager to come out of with a victory.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have bookended their opening four matches with defeats with a tame loss to the Seattle Seahawks getting their campaign underway before a loss to the Las Vegas Raiders last week. In a division which is hot this season, although perhaps not quite as hot as it was billed to be, the Broncos certainly can’t afford to be beginning 2-3 with a loss in the AFC West to their name already so this is a big match for them.

If they are going to win this match and turn into the team many expected them to be then they are going to have to come to the party offensively. Last week was the first time they have put more than 16 points on the board but it still wasn’t good enough to get the job done. With their defence a little bashed up here and their running game beginning to really struggle this would be a good night for Russell Wilson to start cooking.

Indianapolis Colts

There is no shortage of pressure on the Indianapolis Colts in this match either. With the Jacksonville Jaguars looking good in the early stages of this season the Colts might already be playing for a wildcard spot in the play-offs and a 1-2-1 record from their opening four matches isn’t really going to get them anywhere. A win here would restore some confidence and would move them into the pack after the opening quarter of the season.

Indianapolis showed how good a team they can be when they knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs in their only win so far this season but in the other three games they have floundered quite badly. Their run game has sunk in recent weeks and may dip completely here with Jonathan Taylor ruled out of the match. Defensively they have been competitive with no team having scored more than 24 points against them so they need their offense to come and help them out.

Betting

This looks like a classic match where points are going to be hard to come by. I don’t think we need to dwell on the point too much but these two offenses are beginning to flatter to deceive a little and with this match being off the short week there hasn’t been oodles of time to address the issue. When you consider both of these sides are probably designed to run the ball to bring the arm of their quarterback into play later in the game, the absence of both main running backs isn’t going to help the situation.

Although the Denver defence is missing one or two on the defensive line, their secondary is performing well enough to contain the Matt Ryan passing game and there is more than enough in the Colts’ defence to keep Russell Wilson honest, be that in a pass rush which is performing well this season or in the backfield where even the great Patrick Mahomes and his support cast could only put 17 points on them. When you club it all together under 43 points looks the play here.
