There are just three weeks left in the NFL 2022 regular season and the first of those begins on Thursday night when the top two players from the 2021 draft oppose each other when the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
This has suddenly become a big match in the season of both teams. The Jaguars can move to within a game of the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South with a win here while the Jets have to win to keep their wildcard hopes alive.
New York Jets
The New York Jets were beaten by the Detroit Lions in a late smash and grab last week and that has left them certainly needing to win two of their last three matches to extend their season but more likely win out from here so they head into the Thursday Night Football needing to have forgotten about last week and focus very much on the task at hand. Once again they will have Zach Gordon under center with Mike White ruled out of this contest.
Last week will have been all the more annoying for the Jets because they put themselves in a winning position, one which they surrendered when they fell for something of a trick play when they tried to put the game on ice, and then missed a field goal to take the match to overtime. Wilson was the starter last week and was inconsistent, a performance which has largely mirrored his career. That one play late on aside, the Jets defence maintained its form so if Wilson can play a decent game the home side will fancy their chances.

Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars knocked off the Dallas Cowboys last week which really highlights the potential of this team. They have now won three of their last four matches and with the Tennessee Titans slumping at the same time the race for the AFC South title is very much on now. Trevor Lawrence is suddenly playing the quarterback position to an extremely high level and the Jags will be heading to the Big Apple feeling good about their chances.
There has never been a shortness of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball for the Jaguars, the difference has been getting the ball to them to allow them to do their thing and that has suddenly started to happen. The one concern for the Jaguars is that they have conceded 27 points or more in four of their last five matches and if points are hard to come by against a team with a strong defence then they certainly don’t need their own defence to be surrendering too many.
Betting
This is a similar match on paper to the one the New York Jets were involved in with the Detroit Lions albeit with the caveat that it comes off the shorter week for both. The Jets are the team with the elite defence while the Jaguars are an offensive team. In that match here last week the offensive team won and it might be that lightning strikes twice but I don’t like taking road teams on the Thursday night and I’m not completely convinced Jacksonville win anyway.
The points line for this one has me interested though. You can get over 35.5 at a backable price and while a lot of that is down to the weather forecast which is for heavy rain, this is a short week and it is hard for the defences to go to the well for two full games in short succession let alone a Jacksonville one who went to overtime at the weekend. The Jacksonville defence is very ordinary so the Jets should be able to put some points on the board but in these conditions the Jets defence might be vulnerable the longer the game goes on. Throw in defensive scores with a slippy ball and I think there is enough to take over 35.5 points in this one.
