NFL 2022 – Los Angeles Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs Tips and Betting Preview

Week 2 of the NFL season gets underway with an AFC West clash as the Kansas City Chiefs welcome the Los Angeles Chargers to Arrowhead Stadium as two teams who won in the opening week of the campaign look to be the first to reach 2-0.

Both these teams would have had their eyes set on a run to the Super Bowl when the season got underway last week and we saw nothing in their opening matches to suggest those ambitions would be beyond them. This should be a cracking Thursday Night Football.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs opened up their campaign in Arizona, which is where they will hope to conclude it with that being where the Super Bowl is taking place this season. On the face of it their opening match away to the Arizona Cardinals looked a tough one, with the doubts over whether the Kansas City offense would still be explosive without the deep ball thrat of Tyreeq Hill. Those doubts or concerns were swiftly put to bed as the Chiefs dominated throughout.

This one might be a little tougher but home advantage at Arrowhead is always a massive thing. Even so, Kansas City will know that if they don’t win this and look good doing it then it won’t take a lot for the same questions to come back again. Kansas City have won 13 of the last 16 battles against the Chargers but will need to be spot on defensively to continue that fine run because we saw last week that Los Angeles carry plenty of threat.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers kicked off their campaign with a home win over the Las Vegas Raiders last week. There was a feeling that they fell over the line in that match but I don’t think too many matches in the AFC West are going to be won that easily so I don’t think we should hold that against the Chargers. They will know that there is a lot of expectation to be the team to keep the Vince Lombardi Trophy in LA this term so it was important that they opened with a win regardless of how it looked.

All eyes will be on the Chargers defence here. They are obviously going to be tested but if they can stand up to that scrutiny and come out of it on the other side then there is no reason why they won’t progress and have a top notch season. If they don’t and are vulnerable every time they come up against a decent offense and have to rely on their own offense then they will be rolling the dice over just what they can achieve because as good as Justin Herbert appears to be, it is a pretty tough gig for him to take them to their Super Bowl alone.

Betting

This should be a brilliant Thursday Night Football between two teams who are entertaining to watch and who are both Super Bowl contenders. We might even be seeing the two leading lights in the race for the MVP this season in Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert in this match and they should combine for a great match. My hunch is that the Los Angeles Chargers will keep this close with their brutal looking pass rush but I’m in no rush to take on Mahomes after last week so I’ll go with another bet here.

That comes in the form of a touchdown for the Kansas City Chiefs’ running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. He collected a couple of scores in the win in Arizona last week and you would imagine with the relentless pressure that will be coming in the direction of the Chiefs’ triggerman here then he is going to utilise his all-purpose back much more here. The Chargers allowed Las Vegas to rush for five yards per carry last week and one of their running backs caught a touchdown pass and if JC Jackson is fit to line up for the Bolts to strengthen their secondary then the Chiefs may rely on the run and the check down pass more often which brings a CEH score into the game even more.
