NFL 2022 – Washington Commanders @ Philadelphia Eagles Tips and Betting Preview

The final match of what has been another entertaining week in the NFL comes from the home of the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles. They host their NFC East rivals Washington Commanders in an intriguing Monday Night Football.

The NFC East is holding claims to be the best division in football at present and the Philadelphia Eagles can go further clear at the top of it with a win, while a Washington win would move them right back into the wildcard picture.

Philadelphia Eagles

I think if you had told anyone that almost halfway through their regular season the Philadelphia Eagles would be 8-0 for the campaign and looking at a perfect term you would have got a few funny looks, but to be fair to the Eagles they have lived up to that record and will be confident of extending it over the course of this match. If you think that teams tend to get into the postseason with 10 wins, a win here would leave them needing just one more, although they’ll have their eyes on much better things than just a wildcard berth.

Philadelphia have come on massively on offense. Jalen Hurts has transformed his passing game, helped by some really good recruiting in the close season, and now the Eagles can beat teams on the ground and through the air. That in turn is massively helping their defence but they don’t really need that because they are one of the toughest teams in the league personnel wise on defence and they are playing up to that billing as well.

Washington Commanders

When the Washington Commanders opened up their season with four defeats in their opening five matches, they could have been forgiven for tanking the remainder of the year and shuffling themselves into a position where they could sign a stud in the draft. They haven’t done that though. They have come back with three wins in their last four matches, a run which was only ended by the Minnesota Vikings, who themselves are having a great season.

The big thing for Washington has been that defensively they are looking strong. That side of the ball will be tested here but they only let Philadelphia get 24 points in the reverse meeting between the two. Where their season will ultimately be decided is with their offense. They are hoping Taylor Heinecke can find a spark on the offense, although he is going to need to play one of his best matches of the season to come out on top against this Philadelphia defence.

Betting

Philadelphia Eagles are clearly a worthy favourite in this match but they are being asked to cover around an 11 point spread. That always feels right but we are in the meat and drink stage of the season where it is all about winning the match rather than running up the score. There is also the point that the Washington Commanders’ defence merits a bit of respect, especially against the run which is usually where the Eagles like to hurt teams.

That leads me to the side markets where I will go at the Jalen Hurts passing attempts one where we have a line of 30.5. It is unlikely the Eagles are going to get much joy on the ground. They will pack the box and ask Hurts to beat them through the air. In recent times, the Commanders rushing defence have restricted Miles Sanders, Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook to relatively few yards so you would think Philadelphia will need to play this match through the air. Hurts has cleared this 30.5 attempts line four times this season, including in the reverse meeting between these two, and against a run D as good as the Washington one I expect him to be forced to cover it again.
