The second part of the Thanksgiving Day triple header in the NFL 2023 season comes as always from Texas where the Dallas Cowboys will be on show when they host their NFC East rivals Washington Commanders.
Dallas have caught fire in recent weeks as they go about chasing down the Philadelphia Eagles at the top of the division. Washington have struggled and at 4-7 for the season they are largely playing the role of party poopers.
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys were fancied by many to have a run at the Super Bowl this season but their immediate problem was always going to be overcoming the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East to make the path to the big dance slightly easier. That hurdle is becoming increasingly difficult to negotiate and if they are to have any chance of doing it then this is a match the Cowboys simply have to win, although they are heavily expected to do that.
The Cowboys are 7-3 for the season and are going pretty well on both sides of the ball. Two of their defeats have been against the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles so they have lost to a couple of elite teams. Washington aren’t in that guise and Dallas come into this game having just put up 49 points on the New York Giants and another 33 on the road in Carolina last week. That is reducing the pressure on their defence and that is working well too. Dallas are 4-0 at home this season.

Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders actually started their season well with a couple of wins to open up their campaign but things have dropped off dramatically since then with them losing seven of their next nine and while there is still a mathematical equation that they can make the postseason, it would need an extraordinary turnaround, the sort which isn’t really going to happen, so their aim now is to build something for next season and show what they can achieve.
Things might have hit rock bottom for the Commanders last week when they shipped 31 points to arguably the worst team in the league in the New York Giants in what was their fourth defeat in five matches. A defence that got taken apart from an indifferent side could certainly do without running into a powerful offense on a short week so if the Commanders are even going to be competitive in this match they need their offense to come to the party.
Betting
This would appear to be a really tough assignment for the Washington Commanders, so much so that they are being given almost two touchdowns on the point spread for this one. I certainly wouldn’t want to back them even with that start but there might be a scenario where the Dallas Cowboys rest starters in the fourth quarter and Washington nail a back door cover so I’m happy to leave the match markets well alone in this one.
The bet that I like here is for the Dallas Cowboys to put up more than 30.5 points on the Commanders. Washington have just shipped 31 points to a terrible New York Giants offense and conceded 29 in Seattle the week before that. Earlier in the campaign an ordinary Chicago Bears put 40 up on this team while Philadelphia have twice covered this line against them as have the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos. On a short week a potent Dallas should be good for 31 at the very least here.
