The middle match of the triple header of action in the NFL 2024 season on Saturday sees two sides with playoff hopes on their mind battling it out when the Cincinnati Bengals host the Denver Broncos in a huge AFC clash.
The Broncos know that a win here will secure their spot in the postseason with a week to spare. The Bengals start out knowing full well that their season stays alive with a win here but ends should they come up dry so this is a huge game.
Cincinnati Bengals
When you consider that the Cincinnati Bengals were 1-4 for their season at one point, to be 7-8 going into this match tells us that they have improved hugely the longer the year has gone on and if they can find two more wins to close out the season, given that the Broncos face the Kansas City Chiefs next week, there could yet be an extension to their campaign and if they can get what they need to sneak into the playoffs there aren’t many who would want to come up against them.
That offense is led by Joe Burrow, who could be considered an MVP contender were the Bengals not to have had their bad start to the season, and Ja’Marr Chase and there are others in the offense who are going nicely. The problem that the Bengals have had is that their defence has let them down far too often but they have won their last three and look to be building up a head of steam to finish the season with, which is no bad thing going into this one.

Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos were touted to be more of a struggling side this season than one which would make the postseason but they are just one win away from making the latter come true and regardless of whether they get it or not, they deserve a lot of credit for overperforming expectations as drastically as they have. They have largely relied on their defence to get into the position that they are in and so it will be interesting to see how they handle this Cincinnati offense.
Bo Nix has improved the longer the season has gone on and that will certainly help the Broncos should they get into the playoffs because while the old adage that defences win championships still rings true, you will need to put up points to come through in the AFC. The Broncos were beaten by the Chargers last week in a match which ended a four-game winning run but they still put up 27 points on offense so if their defence can get back to performing like it can then they will be fine.
Betting
Whenever you get a Cincinnati Bengals match that has a point line of under 50 I am always tempted by the over and I can’t ignore it here when you consider that the season is on the line for the home side. You could very well argue that it is for the visitors as well when you see that they have the Kansas City Chiefs next week. That could ensure that this one turns into something of an offensive shootout before we even consider how the teams are going.
The Bengals are all about their offense. Their defence gets exposed way more than they would want it to and a team who have put up 166 points in their last five matches look perfectly equipped to take advantage of that. The Broncos are better defensively but a relatively tame Los Angeles Chargers offense have just put 34 points on it and you would expect this much more powerful and turbo charged Cincinnati offense to get after it as a result. Any line under 50 on a Bengals match naturally looks low and I’m happy to be on the over here.
