We have two pearlers in the quarter final line up and two which could get intriguing very quickly over the course of what should be a fantastic day of football across the whole of France. We get underway in the capital where Morocco look to follow up their positive run in the senior World Cup 18 or so months ago when they take on the hosts of the next edition of that competition in USA whose players might well be involved in that tournament in two years. The second match of the day is the first of the great looking matches as Japan, winners of all three matches in the group stage and yet to concede a goal in the competition, go up against a Spain side who are better than what they have shown so far.
The other half of the draw looks nicely poised and we get underway in Marseille where perhaps the surprise package of the quarter finalists meet as Egypt go up against a Paraguay outfit who were my dark horses to make it into the medal action and who are serving me well in that regard. The best is definitely saved for last though as the last of the quarter finals is a repeat of the 2022 World Cup final as France go up against Argentina in a match which is going to guarantee a potential gold medal winner will go home long before the medals are played for.

Goals are the order of the day for me in the men’s football where I like both teams to score in the match between Japan and Spain. Japan are yet to concede a goal in the competition but the only decent opponent they have faced were Paraguay and they were down to 10 men midway through the first half of that contest so there is a good chance they are flattered by their defensive record. Spain are dynamic going forward and have more than enough offensive options to trouble the Japanese here but the Spanish are yet to keep a clean sheet in the competition. Uzbekistan and Dominican Republic both scored against them and I think it is fair to say that this Japan outfit are better than those two. You can get odds against on both teams finding the net here and in a tournament that has been high scoring I expect that to land here.
I’m also a little surprised that the goal line between Egypt and Paraguay is as low as 2.25 goals. It is a bit of a blow to the goals potential that the second leading scorer in the competition, Marcelo Fernandez, is suspended for Paraguay, and it is that which is stopping me going in on Paraguay again here, but they do still have Julio Enciso who is playing well and they are not short of attacking talent even without Fernandez. They do have problems defensively though. Their clean sheet against Mali in their last group game was the first they have kept in nine matches so Egypt are going to fancy their chances in this quarter final but they are going to have their work cut out against a Paraguay side who are programmed to go forward regardless of the consequences. This one looks a prime over candidate and an early goal could spark this into a real ding-dong encounter. I like the over in this one.
