The final full round of games in the Premier League for just over two weeks continues on Saturday afternoon when five matches get played out up and down the country on a day which could once again be pivotal for some of those involved.
I think we can pretty much hand the title to Manchester City but they are one of the teams on show on a usual Saturday where we have two matches on TV to enjoy and the regular ways of staying up to date with the others.
Early Kick Off
Everton begin another new era once again on Saturday when life after Rafael Benitez begins. It does so with Duncan Ferguson in temporary charge of the Toffees and his opening assignment will be to take on Aston Villa, managed by former arch-rival Steven Gerrard and with another Liverpool old boy in their side in Philippe Coutinho. Everton are desperate to arrest a slump they have gotten themselves into while Villa only have one win in their last five matches so this one has the feeling of a competitive encounter about it.
3pm Matches
There are three matches in the usual 3pm kick off slot on Saturday afternoon with the biggest side on show being Manchester United. They play host to rivals for a top four spot in West Ham United, who have already dumped the Red Devils out of the Carabao Cup on this ground this season and will be looking to put more distance between themselves and Man Utd here. David Moyes gets another chance to put one over the club who sacked him in the past and I’m sure would love nothing more than to do that.
Events at the bottom of the table are also in the spotlight on Saturday afternoon when Leeds United host Newcastle United in a match neither will want to lose, although successive wins have at least given the Yorkshire outfit a bit of breathing room at the bottom. Brentford aren’t involved in a relegation fight yet but they are slowly edging their way there. They have a chance to put those fears to bed when they host a Wolverhampton Wanderers side who could end the afternoon within three points of a Champions League place.

Late Game
The action concludes at St Mary’s Stadium where Southampton will look to put a defeat at Wolves last week behind them when they host the champions in waiting Manchester City, who will be looking to continue this quite frankly ridiculous run of wins they are in the middle of in all competitions. With a break to come after this match City can give this their all and that might not be music to the ears of the Saints, although you would expect Southampton to have a good go on home soil.
Betting
I’ll go with one bet and it is the obvious looking bet at Elland Road where I’m expecting to see some goals in the offing. Going to places and playing for a point can’t really be part of the Eddie Howe masterplan now after his Newcastle United side failed to beat Watford last weekend, a result which looks even worse now after their mauling by Norwich on Friday night. Newcastle really need to take the game to their opponents and go after wins not draws particularly with some winnable games coming up.
Leeds United only ever take the game to their opposition so we know how they are going to play and the win over West Ham United last week should have given them oodles of confidence to take into this one with them. I don’t think either of these sides can defend so when you consider Leeds always entertain and Newcastle have to start looking for wins I think it is fair to assume that we are going to get plenty of goal action here and more than 2.75 goals.
