The last two matches before the final day of the Premier League season take place on Wednesday evening when the race for the minor European spots will be in the spotlight with three of the sides battling for positions are in action.
One of the two matches will be live on TV for us to enjoy over the course of the evening and given that the other game has an impact on the race for Europe as well we shouldn’t be short of updates on that. We’ll begin the preview with the TV clash.
Manchester United vs Newcastle United (20.00 – Sky Sports Main Event & Sky Sports Premier League)
The TV cameras head back to Old Trafford on Wednesday night for the clash between Manchester United and Newcastle United where the home side will be looking to move level on points with their opponents heading into the final match of the season.
A run of one win in eight matches has come at the worst time for Manchester United and they are in grave danger of missing out on Europe next season unless they win the FA Cup. Newcastle have come home the other way. They have suffered just one defeat in their last eight and have moved themselves up to sixth spot in the table, which if they can stay there will see them embarking on another European campaign next term. Were they to win this match they could still finish fifth which would see them in the Europa League. A lot of this slump Man Utd are in is down to injury and while they have Lisandro Martinez back for this match, which will at least mean that Casemiro doesn’t have to play at the heart of the defence but that back line still looks vulnerable to a Newcastle attack which has found the net 10 times in their last three matches. Newcastle won at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup earlier in the campaign which will give them further confidence. Man Utd did play better against Arsenal at the weekend than they did at Palace in the match before but Arsenal looked to be playing well within themselves. I don’t see Newcastle doing that. It isn’t really their style and if they can get out in front and get the crowd on the back of these underperforming home players, I think the visitors can come away with the victory at a solid odds against price.

Brighton and Hove Albion vs Chelsea (19.45)
The other match comes from the Amex Stadium where Brighton and Hove Albion will look to get the better of the club who have used them as a bit of a feeder in recent times in the form of Chelsea, who are still battling for European football next season.
Chelsea have taken an age to come to the boil but they are finishing the season like they were expected to play for the majority of it but you suspect the home crowd in particular will be up for this with the likes of Moises Caicedo returning for the first time since he departed the Seagulls. Brighton have laboured in 2024 but there have been signs in the last couple of matches that they have been getting things right. Just the sheer nature of the way Chelsea are playing at the minute you would expect this to be a high scoring game but Brighton matches have suddenly gone a little quiet. I wouldn’t want to back the under in a Chelsea match though so this one is one to leave alone in my eyes.
