The Premier League weekend begins with seven matches taking place on a busy Saturday of action in the top flight as the table at both ends of proceedings begins to take shape and we get closer to finding out who might be where this term.
This is a typical Saturday in the UK in terms of we begin and end with a TV match and then the other five matches take place in the usual kick off time where updates are in the regular places for those who aren’t going to one of those games.
Early Kick Off
Not for the first time this season, we begin the day at St James’ Park where Newcastle United will look to build on their midweek win in the Carabao Cup when they play host to an Arsenal side who really have no room for defeat after two matches without a win in the Premier League. Arsenal were able to rest most of their starters for the match against Preston in midweek whereas Newcastle went with a lot of theirs so with the short turnaround it will be interesting to see if that has any impact on this match.
3pm Matches
The champions and league leaders Manchester City are in rare Saturday 3pm waters this week. Their injury depleted squad will head to the Vitality Stadium where AFC Bournemouth will be looking to add them to Arsenal in their list of home scalps this season. Liverpool are in second place in the table and they will be looking to keep pace with the champions when they go up against Brighton and Hove Albion for the second time in three days after the pair met in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening. Liverpool won that match at the Amex and they replay it at Anfield here.
Three other games take place in this kick off slot with two sides at the bottom of the table meeting when Ipswich Town host Leicester City in what already feels like a pivotal game for both outfits. Southampton are the other promoted side who are struggling and they probably need to beat an improved Everton team for their own confidence as much as what the league table says. The other match comes from the City Ground where Nottingham Forest will look to remain in a lofty position in the table when they host an inconsistent West Ham United side.

Late Game
The action concludes at Molineux where things are about to get real for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves have had a tough fixture list to begin the season but that is about to level out and they need to get wins on the board and quickly. They will be hoping that the first one comes along against Crystal Palace under the lights on Saturday evening particularly with the visitors being without their talismanic creator Eberechi Eze who is out with the injury he picked up in the Carabao Cup win in midweek. Both teams are much lower in the table than they would want to be so this should be a competitive closer to the day.
Betting
I’m going to bet in two matches on Saturday. The first one is Ipswich vs Leicester City where having watched Leicester defend set plays last Friday against Nottingham Forest I’m convinced that they are about to concede a raft of goals from them because the statistic that came up on Sky was that they have now given up a pretty stupid 55 shots from set plays this term. It is actually something of a miracle that they have only conceded one set piece goal but that just isn’t sustainable if they keep coughing up those levels of chances and with Leif Davis having a blinding delivery Ipswich should look to fill their boots every time they can whack the ball into the box. You can get 11/1 and 12/1 on Dara O’Shea and Cameron Burgess, the two likely starting centre-backs to score anytime in this match and that might be worth backing both in the hope one pops up to secure a profit and hopefully both to give out a real good start to the day.
The other bet that I like is for Wolverhampton Wanderers to get the better of Crystal Palace. I liked Wolves for this one anyway but the injury to Eberechi Eze is just too much to ignore. Palace don’t have a great record without their creative spark and I’m not sure anything will improve here. I say that because Palace played pretty much their starting XI in the Carabao Cup at Villa in midweek and while they won the game, they had just 37% of the ball and have had no turnover time for this one. Wolves are beginning to see their fixtures level out a little bit and coming back from the dead against Brighton last week will hopefully have pepped them up for this one. Wolves have a lot of players a card away from a ban so they really need a win before they lose some of those players and against a Palace side missing their key man with less than 72hrs turnover time, this looks like a great chance for them to open their account for the season.
