The heavily reduced Premier League fixture list this weekend concludes on Sunday with just the one match to form a truncated Super Sunday on Sky. This week it comes from Anfield as Liverpool look to put some distance between themselves and the chasing pack in the race for fourth place while Burnley will be looking for a first double over Liverpool in more than 80 years.
Liverpool
It remains to be seen which Liverpool we are going to see in this match. They have been dogged with inconsistency for a while now and just three wins in their last 13 matches tells a sorry tale. You would think that will get better at some point but at the same time you’re probably not risking too much when you say it.
Defensively this Liverpool side have been a mess for far too long now and it will be interesting to see how they cope with the pace and power of Andre Gray and the skills of whoever partners him up top. Liverpool are generally good at home though with Swansea the only side to have picked up three points at Anfield this season.
Burnley
It has been an excellent first season back in the top flight for Burnley and a win here would cap it off nicely. Such has been their quality this season that we are in the middle of March and at no point have they had any relegation worries which is a credit to both the players and the jobs the coaching staff have done.
Much of Burnley’s good work this season has been at home. They are yet to win on the road this season but there is no doubt they are improving with each match they play away from home as narrow recent defeats at Tottenham and Man City can testify. With England squads to be announced shortly this is a platform for some of their players to throw their hat into the ring.
Team News
It looks as though Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will be missing once again while Daniel Sturridge is definitely out. There are also doubts over Roberto Firmino and Dejan Lovren.
Burnley are likely to have Tom Heaton fit after he has recovered from an illness and Joey Barton has recovered from a hamstring strain and can play after his hearing for his betting allegations was delayed. Steven Defour and Johann Berg Gudmundsson remain out.
Betting
It is tricky to back Liverpool with any confidence at the minute given their inconsistency and this is a match which fits the trend of those which they have struggled in. I’m not sure that they won’t win this but I wouldn’t like to say for sure that they will.
The bet I like in this match is for Burnley to score a goal which amazingly is even money. They have scored in their last 11 matches in the league which includes at Tottenham, Man City and Arsenal so the big stages don’t faze them. Liverpool are anything but watertight at the back so Burnley will get chances.
Liverpool have only kept one clean sheet in their last eight matches so the chances of Burnley scoring has to be much better than an even chance so I’m on over 0.5.
