RBC Canadian Open Betting Preview – Two outsiders to go well in Ontario

Before the Canadian Open begins on Thursday, like with the Omega European Masters I will go through the outright market beyond the frontrunners and take a couple of outsiders who could give us a run for our money.

Last year Tim Clark won the title at a healthy double figure price which shows that outsiders can go well in this tournament and can even go all the way and there are a few at huge prices who are well worth a second look this week.

As with the outright market I’m looking for players who hit a lot of fairways and who have the ability to get up and down if they miss the greens or those who hit a lot of greens in regulation and immediately two men catch my eye in that regard.

Emiliano Grillo has tried his hand in a couple of PGA Tour events this season and he’s lost in a playoff in one and been in the top 10 in the other. He is a relentlessly straight hitter of a golf ball in Europe. He is in the top 20 in fairways hit which is a big statistic around here and he’s also in the top 30 in the greens in regulation stat. He isn’t too far down the field in the putting stats either. Given that he’s gone well in two lesser tournaments on the PGA Tour the next step is to go well in a full one and this could be the week he does that.

Greg Owen is another player in good form going into this week. Three of his last four tournaments have seen him finish in the top 20 and they have had some decent fields to them. He’s hitting the ball straight which is important around this course and he has enough of a game on and around the greens to get the job done too. Confidence is a big thing in the game of golf and Owen has it and with that in mind I’ll give him a go this week too.
