There are six more matches in the Royal London One Day Cup on Wednesday before the competition takes a two day break to allow the NatWest T20 Blast group stage to come to a conclusion. In among the matches on Wednesday we have a televised match to try and get stuck into as well as the other ones.
Derbyshire vs Lancashire
The televised action comes from Derby as Derbyshire look to kick on and secure a place in the knockout stages of this competition. Lancashire’s defeat on Tuesday has meant they won’t be making the quarter finals so that might free them up to play their best cricket.
Derbyshire lost their first game back from the break at the weekend but they played a Nottinghamshire side who are playing some pretty fearsome cricket at the minute and there is no harm in losing that. They’re certainly not up against anything nearly as strong here.
Lancashire were given a good hiding by Leicestershire on Tuesday so they can’t be coming here with much confidence and having taken a battering by Yorkshire earlier in the competition they haven’t really got going in 50 over cricket this season. They have missed Jos Buttler with the bat and he remains out here which is less than ideal.
I like Derbyshire here. I’m not convinced they are much of a side in terms of going the distance in this tournament but they should have enough for Lancashire here just like they had way too much for them in the T20 match they played on this ground not so long ago. Derbyshire are batting well and Lancashire aren’t and that is the simple way of expecting a home win.
With Lancashire’s batting troubles clearly in existence I’m going to have a dabble in their top batsman market where Luke Proctor could be a little overpriced at 14/1. Proctor made a ton in the Championship defeat to Durham last week so he is one of few in good form and on a sometimes tricky deck those runs can stand him in good stead. He batted at four against Leicestershire on Tuesday and if he does that here this 14/1 could look very big very quickly.
Non TV – North Group
There are three other matches in the North Group on Wednesday with early starts between Worcestershire and Northamptonshire at New Road and Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire at Scarborough while Durham host Warwickshire in another early start.
Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire should be a cracking match and you could argue bookmakers have it the wrong way around in making Yorkshire favourites but Yorkshire are full of depth and quality. In truth there isn’t a lot between the two sides so there isn’t too much of an edge there.
One bet stands out up at Durham and that is a player performance for Rikki Clarke. Clarke is bowling brilliantly at the minute having taken seven wickets in his last two matches and we all know that he is a demon fielder and a pretty good batsman at this level and in this format too. His line is 40.5 and that looks too low to me. An average game gets that covered while a decent game with either bat or ball also covers it so I’ll go over there.
Non TV – South Group
Just the two matches are in this group but I’m interested in a bet in both of them. Surrey take on Gloucestershire in one game while Sussex host Hampshire in the other one. I’ll go through the latter game first.
Hampshire arrive at Hove off the back of a convincing defeat to Kent on Tuesday and I’ve waxed lyrical about how hard it is to back up performances the next day in one day cricket especially off the back of a defeat and that’s what Hampshire must do here. It isn’t as hard to back up a 50 over match as it is a 20 over one because the intensity isn’t the same but even so it isn’t ideal.
Sussex have had a day to work out what went wrong against Gloucestershire on Sunday and put that right and even though they have Mustafizur Rahman sidelined with a shoulder injury I still like the Sharks here. Chris Jordan, Ajmal Shahzad and the returning George Garton provide a solid pace trio and with the quality batting they have at the top of their order I expect Sussex to get revenge for their T20 loss a week or so ago.
In the other match I’m back to the performance markets again as the line for Benny Howell looks perfectly achievable at 45.5. He often picks up wickets with the ball and he is very solid with the bat and he is usually in key positions in the field so he is hardly ever out of the game at any point.
In all Howell has eight wickets from the five games he has played in this tournament and a couple of catches as well. He also has 153 runs at an average over 30 so he’s involved in the game enough to cover that line with a little to spare.
