SA20 2023 – Joburg Super Kings vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape Tips and Betting Preview

There are four matches left in the regular season in the inaugural SA20 competition and half of those come along in a double header of action on Sunday which begins with the Joburg Super Kings taking on the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

The Eastern Cape finish their season here but realistically only need to avoid a heavy defeat and they will be into the semi-finals. Joburg need to find one win from their last two matches to book their own spot in the final four.

Joburg Super Kings

The Joburg Super Kings were denied their first chance to seal a semi-final spot earlier in the week when the rain intervened but there shouldn’t be any interruption in this match so they have the chance to make it into the semi-final with a match to spare. A win would not just seal a spot in the last four but would move the Super Kings up to second and give them every chance of avoid the runaway leaders Pretoria Capitals in the semi-final.

It might not be needed to get them into the semi-final but if the Joburg Super Kings are going to win this tournament then their batting is going to need to come to the party as one. It has been a while since some of their batters have had a hit in the middle so they could do with them hitting the ground running and building up some form, especially with them being without their two best bowlers in the competition to date.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape were also frustrated in their attempts to seal their spot in the semi-final of the competition earlier in the week when the rain got involved in one of their matches too. The points they picked up from that washout did them a bit of a favour though and they are so far clear of fifth on net run rate that it would take two extraordinary results for them not to make it into the final four from here. They will have a bit of an anxious wait for it to be confirmed if they lose this though.

I think it is fair to say that the success the Sunrisers have had this season has largely been down to their bowlers but when they get to the latter stages of the competition the altitude will come into play and you would think their batters would need to start winning matches for them. This will be good preparation for that and if their batters can get the job done there might be enough variety in their bowling unit to get the job done.

Key Players

Faf du Plessis has had a good tournament for the Joburg Super Kings and you sense if they are going to go all the way they will need his form to continue for another week to get them off to the sort of starts that are needed in this part of the world.

Teams can really put bowlers under pressure at the top of the innings on this ground and Adam Rossington looks in the sort of form to do that for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. If he can get going he could have his team ahead of the game very quickly.

Betting

I’ve been all over the sixes on this ground in the three matches that have been played here so far and I’m not changing my stance for this one. If anything, the big hits are more likely to flow here because barring a quite frankly ridiculous set of results these two teams are going to be into the semi-finals so there is no reason why the batters can’t use the match as a big of a range hitting hit out and send the ball out of the ground.

We know the ball flies further here than at any ground in South Africa and we also know that these two attacks aren’t really suited to the test that the Bullring provides. I think the spinners of both sides are more impactful than the seamers but there isn’t much going for the spinners on these small grounds. There has only been six overs of cricket here in the last couple of weeks so the pitches aren’t going to be playing badly and with the semi-final and final here we might even be away from the middle of the square for this one. I’m more than happy to get on over 12.5 sixes in this one.
