The Scottish Open is down to the last 16 stage and from here on in only the two main tables are in action as the entire round takes place across two sessions of snooker as the last tournament of the season plays down to the quarter final stage.
This is the first time in the tournament that members of the top 16 could draw each other but such is the amount of shocks there have been in the event there is only one match where the elite meet but we should still have a competitive day of action.
Afternoon Session
That battle of two members of the elite top 16 opens up the day on the main table when the International Championship winner Ding Junhui faces off against a Luca Brecel who is massively under threat for his tour place at the end of the season and could really do with maximising his week to avoid dropping off the tour. While they are battling it out on the main table, the Wuhan Open winner Xiao Guodong takes on the home star Stephen Maguire.
When they are done two men who have finished runners up in a tournament this season meet on the main table when the UK Championship finalist takes on the man who was two frames away from winning the English Open in Wu Yize. The former Shootout winner and International Championship finalist Chris Wakelin will be aiming to progress on the other table. He meets one of the six remaining Chinese players in Xing Zihao.

Evening Session
The other standout match of the round will open up the evening session on the main table when Mark Allen will look to make it into the quarter final when he goes up against Jack Lisowski. Allen beat Lisowski at the UK Championship and will be looking to follow that up here. Our one remaining outright bet, Tom Ford, will be on show over on table two when he faces another of the Chinese contingent in the form of Long Zehuang.
The main table in the second part of the evening will be occupied by the man who reached the final of The Masters at the beginning of the year and will be looking to end the year by reaching the final here in Ali Carter. He meets the man who was beaten in the final here last year in Noppon Saengkham. Stuart Bingham will also be looking to make progress when he meets the lowest ranked player left in the competition in the form of Lei Peifan.
Betting
I’ll take one bet over the course of the action on Thursday and it sees Barry Hawkins going up against Wu Yize in a match where I expect Hawkins, who looks to be playing something like his best snooker again, to come through with a bit in hand. There is no doubt that Wu Yize is going to be a star and will get towards the top of the game but he isn’t the most consistent right now. He made the English Open final earlier in the season but he hasn’t really done a huge amount since then.
Hawkins made the final in York earlier in the month and he has already seen off two competent challengers here in Alexander Ursenbacher and John Higgins and he scored very well in both matches which confirms that he is in decent form. Hawkins getting better as a season goes on is nothing new and he is now back in the top 16 and eager to win matches to stay there. I always think the Chinese youngsters are good until they come up against the better all-round players and Hawkins is one of those. I think he’ll win this with a bit to spare.
Tips
Back B.Hawkins (-1.5 frames) to beat W.Yize for a 3/10 stake at 2.15 with Coral
