The Sky Bet Championship continues to catch up after the spate of matches which got cancelled over the Christmas period and either side and it does so with two of those games taking place on a key looking Wednesday evening.
Four teams are on show and in the main the focus will be on the bottom of the table where three sides in the battle to avoid the drop are on show. The other team are chasing the top six so this should be a competitive evening, one where both matches can be watched live on the red button on Sky Football.
Barnsley vs Cardiff City (19.45)
The one match of the evening which features two sides down the wrong end of the table comes from Oakwell where Barnsley play host to Cardiff City with both teams enduring disastrous campaigns compared to last term.
Even with two teams receiving point deductions Barnsley sit rock bottom of the table, which is never a good starting point. They are eight points adrift of safety and really could do with a win here to give themselves a chance of catching those above them. Cardiff eased their relegation fears on Sunday when they beat Nottingham Forest and can make the remainder of the season much easier for themselves if they can find a win here which would put a nine point gap between them and the bottom three. That was a good win for Cardiff at the weekend but I’m still not comfortable backing them as favourites. I can’t be going anywhere near a team who have only won once since the second game of the season though. Cardiff should win this and should win it well but I can do without the heartache they might put us through as they are fairly limited themselves at the minute.

Huddersfield Town vs Derby County (19.45)
The other match taking place on Wednesday evening comes from Yorkshire where the play-off chasing Huddersfield Town play host to a Derby County side who are scrapping for their lives despite all the adversity they are currently suffering.
These two sides both picked up draws at the weekend with Huddersfield Town holding Stoke City while Derby came back from 2-0 down at home to Birmingham City to draw 2-2 in the last minute. That will buoy the Rams and they might need it because they have drawn a bit of a short straw recovery time wise with their match being on Sunday afternoon while Huddersfield were resting up after their Friday night showdown. There were definite signs of a bit of vulnerability within Huddersfield against Stoke and Derby might well be able to exploit that, but going the other way you would think the Terriers are showing enough to get at an aging Derby defence, particularly when you consider that Wayne Rooney’s men need to take some risks to look to win matches at the minute to give themselves the best chance of staying up. Derby have scored twice and conceded twice in four of their last five matches while in recent times Huddersfield have played out two 3-2s and a 4-3 so I think this one has the potential for goals with both sides eager for the points in their relevant quests.
