The middle set of three rounds of matches in the Sky Bet Championship in quick succession begins on Tuesday night when half of the division play their second games on an evening where the battle to beat the drop and the promotion race are in the spotlight.
The good thing about this being a midweek round is that all of the matches are available to us to watch. Two of them are on the main channels while the other four will be accessible via the red button for those who have that service.
Tuesday’s fixtures are as follows: (7.45pm unless stated – TV in brackets)
Blackpool v Queens Park Rangers

The TV cameras are in the north on Tuesday evening with the main game coming from the Riverside Stadium where Middlesbrough will look to move to within a point of Sheffield United in the race for automatic promotion. In order for them to get into that position they will need to beat a Stoke City side who have won their last two matches in confident fashion. Slightly prior to that one starting, Wigan Athletic will look to give their survival chances a boost when they play host to a Coventry City team who are chasing a place in the top six and need to win to stay in that race.
Millwall are the team who currently occupy the final spot in the play-offs and they have the chance to consolidate that when they play host to a Swansea City team who are going nowhere fast. Speaking of teams going nowhere fast, Watford are in action on Tuesday evening too. They host Birmingham City at Vicarage Road while the other two matches could impact the battle to avoid the drop as Blackpool host Queens Park Rangers and Rotherham United welcome Preston North End to the New York Stadium.
Betting
Home teams could have a really good night on Tuesday with cases to be made for all six of them winning but I think the best bet among them is Millwall who host a Swansea City side who look all at sea to me. Swansea are perfectly safe but they’re not going to get near the play-offs so you could kind of forgive them if they are struggling for motivation but more than anything they lack a goal threat unless Joel Piroe has a day out and worse still their defence is enough to give a bionic man palpitations.
Millwall should be confident here. They have just been to Reading and won and in recent weeks here at The New Den they have seen off Sheffield United and held Burnley and were a little unfortunate not to get something from a match with Norwich City in a match where they won the xG battle 2.13-0.49 yet lost 3-2. The Lions are used to playing without too much of the ball so the possession based stuff that Swansea will come at them with will be of no issue to Millwall. As long as Millwall defend solidly and keep Piroe quiet I don’t expect them to slip up here.
