Sky Bet Championship 2023-24 – Tuesday 19th September Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

We are hitting the point of the Sky Bet Championship season where the fixtures begin to come thick and fast and that means midweek action with half of the division on show on what could be a big Tuesday evening for those involved.

The good thing about only half of the division being on show is that we can keep up to date with the action much easier. Two of the matches are live on the main TV channels with the other four all being accessible via the red button.

Tuesday’s fixtures are as follows: (7.45pm and Red Button unless stated)

Bristol City v Plymouth Argyle

Cardiff City v Coventry City

Preston North End v Birmingham City (Sky Sports Arena)

Queens Park Rangers v Swansea City

Southampton v Ipswich Town

Sheffield Wednesday v Middlesbrough (8pm – Sky Main Event & Sky Football)

Preview

The top and the bottom end of the table are in the spotlight across the two TV games on the main channels on Tuesday. The one which is getting the full coverage is the battle of the bottom two as winless Sheffield Wednesday host the only team below them in the table in what already feels like a big game at Hillsborough. At the other end of the table the leaders Preston North End will be looking to remain top of the pile when they host a Birmingham City side who have started the season very well. The Deepdale clash is the secondary TV option.

Elsewhere, two sides who will be looking to be in the promotion mix at the end of the season meet at Portman Road when Southampton play host to Ipswich Town while two sides in the bottom five collide at Loftus Road when QPR take on a winless Swansea City who could still be reeling from their derby loss at the weekend. On the flip side of that, Cardiff City will be buoyed by beating their rivals and host Coventry City on Tuesday evening with Bristol City taking on Plymouth Argyle at Ashton Gate in the other game.

Betting

I’m always reluctant to get too involved in a midweek fixture list because the turnaround is short and the preparation time almost non-existent but that can work in our favour because the obvious standout bet is over 2.75 goals in the St Mary’s clash between Southampton and Ipswich Town. Southampton look an absolute mess at the back and clearly aren’t comfortable playing the way Russell Martin wants them too, particularly among their defenders, and Ipswich have the attacking talent to take advantage of that.

Southampton aren’t struggling offensively to be fair to them. They have scored in all bar one game and notched twice or more in four of their six but no team has come close to the 16 goals they have conceded in their six games. Ipswich haven’t been much tighter with seven against them in their six games, although four of them came against Leeds but that was one of just two top half teams they have faced and they conceded at Sunderland which was the other one so their defence isn’t watertight against the better teams. I fail to see how there aren’t multiple goals in this game.
