Big Matches
The main TV cameras start rolling at Bramall Lane where Sheffield United look to bounce back from a first home defeat on Boxing Day when they host managerless West Bromwich Albion. While that is going on Norwich City will look for three points when they play their last home game of 2024 against Queens Park Rangers while Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to build on their comeback at Middlesbrough on Thursday when they go to Deepdale to take on Preston North End. Later in the evening the TV cameras are then back at Pride Park where Derby County welcome Leeds United before two promotion chasers meet to close out the day when Middlesbrough host Burnley.
Best of the Rest
Three teams in the top six are in action in the 3pm matches. Sunderland are the highest placed of them and they will head to Stoke City who begin life without Narcis Pelach in that match. Blackburn Rovers equalised late against Sunderland on Boxing Day and they’ll be looking for three points when they host Hull City while Watford welcome Cardiff City to Vicarage Road. There is a big clash towards the bottom of the table as Oxford United host Plymouth Argyle. Coventry City will look to build on their huge win on Boxing Day when they host Millwall while Swansea City will look for a six point Christmas when they host Luton Town.
Betting
I think this could be a tough day for all the away sides. Some not so bright spark seems to think it was a good idea to have every team at home on Boxing Day at home again here so the short turnaround and the amount of travelling that the away teams have had to do has to take its toll and Blackburn Rovers are one team who can take advantage of that. They host a Hull City side who have picked up just one point in their last seven away matches so they can’t the best travellers at the best of times let alone with the disadvantages I’ve just highlighted. With that in mind, I’m surprised that we can get even money on a Blackburn win, especially when they host lost just once in their last eight. Hull haven’t got going under Ruben Selles yet and while that might happen at some point there is no guarantee that is here.
The other bet I like the look of on Sunday is for there to be more than 2.5 goals when Oxford United host Plymouth Argyle. Neither of these teams will need me to tell them that this is a match they should be looking at winning and can win but rather than take on Plymouth Argyle, which would be a fairly easy case to make, I think the goals is the best way to play this. Oxford have conceded two or more in six of their last seven matches while Plymouth have conceded two or more in their last seven matches. These are two defensively fragile teams who both know they really need a win here so I expect the goals to flow in what could be a hugely dramatic match.
