It may only be two weeks after the season began but Saturday sees League Two stage a fifth round of fixtures already with all 24 sides looking to end August on a high.
All matches kick off at 3pm and the fixtures are as follows:
AFC Wimbledon vs Exeter City
Accrington vs Northampton Town
Barnet vs Cambridge United
Crawley Town vs Wycombe
Dag + Red vs Stevenage
Hartlepool vs Carlisle United
Leyton Orient vs Bristol Rovers
Luton Town vs Portsmouth
Morecambe vs Notts County
Oxford United vs Yeovil Town
Plymouth Argyle vs Newport
York City vs Mansfield Town
This is a tricky looking set of fixtures. A few sides played in the cup in midweek. Some went 120 minutes, some even went further and some will be tired from that.
In truth there are a number of matches that look quite level regardless of what happened in midweek and as such I’m not sure there is much betting potential in the division in this set of matches.
The game of the day comes at Kenilworth Road where the two pre-season title favourites Luton and Portsmouth go head to head. Luton had a hard 120 minutes against Stoke in midweek and are still looking for their first league win. Portsmouth lost at home to Reading in the cup in midweek while in the league they’ve been going ok. The thousands crammed into Luton’s old ground should be treated to an entertaining match but it isn’t one I can bet on.
I really wouldn’t be surprised if we see a number of draws or surprise results down the card this week as some sides will be playing their seventh match in just 22 days here which is crazy by anyone’s standards but there is one match where I think the form book will come into play.
A regular trend of my League Two pieces this season has been about how I expect Newport to struggle and so far they’ve not disappointed. They head to one of the tougher places in the division to go on Saturday looking for their first win of the season. I’m not convinced they will get it though.
Plymouth have been beaten here by Portsmouth this season but Pompey needed a couple of penalties to win that match. Argyle have won the other three matches in the league this season and they have to have every chance of making it four wins from five here. They’ve seen off Carlisle at Home Park and picked up appealing wins at Northampton and AFC Wimbledon so the home side are in good nick and can get the three points here.
Back Plymouth to beat Newport for a 4/10 stake at 1.80 with William Hill
