Three more matches begin in the Specsavers County Championship on Monday with two more from Division One and another from Division Two as the four day competition makes a reappearance despite the other two competitions still going on.
In Division One we have Durham hosting Yorkshire at the Riverside and Lancashire hosting Warwickshire at Old Trafford less than 24hrs after the two met in the NatWest T20 Blast at Edgbaston – an excellent piece of scheduling if ever there was one!! The Division Two match sees Derbyshire hosting Worcestershire at Derby.
Durham vs Yorkshire
Yorkshire resume their chase for a hat trick of titles in this match when they head to a Durham side who just sit a point below them in the table after the first half a dozen matches of the season. These two sides know how to do the course and distance so this should be a great game.
Durham have one of the best bowling attacks in the country at their disposal and if their batting stands up to the pressure they could go very close in this match. Yorkshire are the best side in the country without a doubt but they have a lot of injury issues so probably didn’t need England’s ODI squad taking the players it has.
That means this will be a very young Yorkshire side taking the field in this one. I’m tempted to take Durham on the face of that but recent history has shown us not to take on Yorkshire in this format so I’ll bite the bullet and give it a swerve.
Lancashire vs Warwickshire
Warwickshire go into this match off the back of a Duckworth Lewis Stern win over Lancashire in the T20 on Sunday although I don’t think that will have too much relevance here. Lancashire go into this match on top of the table but Warwickshire are close enough to go above them if they win the match.
Lancashire will be without Jos Buttler for this match as he is away with England which means that Steven Croft will keep wicket as well as captain the side and while he did it in their last match I’m not sure that is a good long term option.
Warwickshire are missing Chris Wright here but I still love the look of their bowling attack especially with Keith Barker fit and ready to fire again and in Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott they have got two of the better batsmen in county cricket.
There probably isn’t a whole lot between these two but Ian Bell’s availability for Warwickshire just tips this one in their favour for me and at even money I’m happy to put my money where my mouth is.
Derbyshire vs Worcestershire
Derbyshire have struggled again so far this season especially in four day cricket whereas Worcestershire have gone nicely since their opening round washout and nobody in the league have batted better than them in terms of batting bonus points.
With runs almost guaranteed especially now Tom Fell is back in the squad as well, and a bowling attack which has warmed up as the season has gone on I like the look of Worcestershire in this match. If they needed any inspiration in this match then Fell’s appearance will surely give them all they need.
Derbyshire’s struggles have been apparent in this format for a while now and with Worcestershire full of confidence after a good start to the one day competitions in addition to a solid start to the Championship I’m with the visitors here.
