Super Bowl LI – New England Patriots at Atlanta Falcons Betting Preview

The first Sunday in February is upon us which means it is time for ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ which this year is Super Bowl 51. 20 weeks of sweat, hard yards and toil all comes down to four quarters of action on Sunday as the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons battle it out in the season ending Championship match.

The NFL title and the Vince Lombardi Trophy are at stake in Houston as the AFC champions and the NFC champions meet in what should be a classic Super Bowl.

New England Patriots

Nobody truly knew what to expect from the New England Patriots at the beginning of the season after Tom Brady was banned for the first four matches but amazingly they came through that section of the campaign 3-1 and never really looked back losing just one more match in the regular season and looking as efficient as ever.

In the playoffs the Houston Texans gave them a little bit of a scare but since then they have been comfortable. The Pittsburgh Steelers threatened to do something in Foxboro but their challenge was soon snuffed out and the Patriots were able to cruise to the AFC title. They will be looking to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the second time in three years.

Atlanta Falcons

All eyes were on the beaten Super Bowl side from last year Carolina Panthers in the NFC South heading into the season but the Atlanta Falcons never read the script as it was them who dominated that division and did it so impressively that they were able to secure a brace of home matches in the playoffs to get them here.

The Atlanta Falcons offense has been given many plaudits this season and rightly so because it has been amazing but their defence doesn’t always get the credit it deserves especially Vic Beasley who led the league in sacks. If he can get to Brady a couple of times in this match it could make a lot of difference. This is Atlanta’s first Super Bowl since 1998.

Betting

The much used adage around big matches is that defences win championships but I’m not sure there is a defence in football that can contain this Atlanta Falcons offense so I think we can throw that quote out of the window in this Super Bowl.

I’ve had a feeling since Atlanta beat Seattle that they would win the Super Bowl and now is the time to put my money where my mouth is. This Atlanta offense is showing no signs of slowing down and when Seattle can’t stop it I’m not sure it is for stopping as I say. Whoever wins this Super Bowl I think they will win it in a shootout but Atlanta have been winning them for most of the season and I think they’ve got one more in them.

Given that I think this will be a shootout I am expecting plenty of touchdowns. Both sides can go down the field at will and most importantly at speed so touchdown drives should be frequent. Both men have powerful running backs who can pound drives home around the goal line should they need them which always helps the touchdowns flow. I’m expecting to see at least seven of them here.
