Super Bowl LVI – Los Angeles Rams @ Cincinnati Bengals Tips and Betting Preview

Another NFL season comes to a close on Sunday night when the eyes of the world will be on SoFi Stadium as Super Bowl LVI concludes a wonderful campaign when the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Los Angeles Rams in the big show.

One of these two teams will make a bit of history as they have one Super Bowl title between them in over 100 seasons. Both have come through the initial stages of the postseason strongly and are now 60 minutes from immortality.

Cincinnati Bengals

When you consider all that Joe Burrow would have seen and read in the lead up to the postseason was how long it had been since Cincinnati Bengals had won a playoff match, the fact he overcame that hurdle and two significant opponents on the road to make it to this Super Bowl really is a fantastic achievement. This was certainly not within the realistic expectations of anyone affiliated with the Bengals at the beginning of the season but now they have made it this far they will want to go all the way.

If the Bengals are going to leave Los Angeles as the champions they need to find a way to protect their quarterback. The offensive line has not protected him very well all season and they are up against two elite pass rushers here. Unfortunately the run game isn’t likely to get them out of trouble as the Rams’ run defence is one of the best in the league. That means the Bengals defence and some of the tight ends will be big players if the Vince Lombardi Trophy is to go back to Ohio.

Los Angeles Rams

This will be the second year in a row that a team at the Super Bowl has home field advantage. Last year the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came out on top at their own party and even though they are the away team in this contest, the Los Angeles Rams will be looking to emulate Tom Brady and the Bucs and claim the title at their home stadium. The Rams went all in for the Super Bowl this season giving up a host of draft picks to establish an elite looking roster and they are one win from justifying that commitment.

The likes of Odell Beckham Jr and Von Miller joined the ranks as the season went on and now the Rams have a top class offense which is balanced enough to take advantage of whatever the opposition defence weakness is and then they have the pass rush to get to any quarterback in the league. Even if they don’t get to the quarterback they have the class in the secondary to keep opposing offenses quiet. If the Rams don’t beat themselves here they are entitled to think they will be very hard to beat.

Betting

If you followed our NFL bets right from the outset this season then you will already be on the Los Angeles Rams to win this match at 14/1 as they were our pre-season selection. I’m more than happy to let that ride because we’ve already got the place money secured and there is so much in favour of the Rams that they really should get the job done in this match. I don’t think this will be a particularly high scoring game though so that is my route into the main Super Bowl markets.

This has been a fairly high scoring playoff series but there is so much on the line here so I’m expecting a bit of a cagey start. I wouldn’t be completely surprised if with the win all that matters if the Rams adjust on offense to keep Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase off the field for as long as possible knowing that they can rely on their defence to get pressure on the Bengals offense even when it is on the field. The other reason I think this might be low scoring is I just don’t believe this Cincinnati offensive line is going to hold up against the Los Angeles pass rush all night. When you throw it all in the mix I think under 49.5 points looks good here.
