Super League – Super 8s Saturday 17th September Matches Betting Preview

After a quite remarkable Friday night in the Super League the action continues on Saturday with one match in the Super 8s and two more in the qualifiers as we head closer to the end of the season and into the playoffs.

The matches in the qualifiers are pretty big but the Super 8s game is a dead rubber but with two of the three games in front of the TV cameras there should be some excellent betting opportunities. We’ll begin our preview with the first TV game.

Salford Red Devils vs London Broncos

The stakes are pretty high for both these sides. Salford have to win this match to have any chance of finishing in the top three and reclaiming their Super League status while London Broncos have to win to have a chance of competing in the Million Pound Match for the chance to return to the Super League.

Salford go into this match off the back of a huge win over Featherstone last week but I’m not sure what we can take from that although London have suffered back to back heavy defeats as a heavy season looks to have caught up with them.

Salford are giving up 38pts here which probably isn’t enough if they fancy the job but they are so inconsistent I couldn’t say with any confidence they will cover it especially as they don’t need to win big. I’d imagine there will be plenty of points but even a 66.5pt line doesn’t tempt me.

Leigh Centurions vs Batley Bulldogs

Regardless of what happens to Leigh in this match they are a Super League side next season and will head to Leeds to challenge for a trophy to signify the winners of the qualifiers. Batley are playing for pride and these aren’t the kind of games I like getting involved in.

Depending on how badly Leigh want to win the qualifiers they might well rest people ahead of Thursday night and even if they don’t they are having to cover 22pts which is probably fair. If Leigh want to win big they can do but the lack of intensity in the match doesn’t tempt me to get involved.

Catalans Dragons vs Castleford Tigers

The Super 8s match rounds off the day and it should be a very entertaining one even though there is nothing on it. These are two of the most attractive sides to watch at the best of times let alone when they have the freedom to give the ball some air and throw it around with gay abandon.

Neither of these sides are the best defensively but they both have tries in them for fun and with the lack of intensity in the game I’m expecting the points to be racked up in a big way here. Points come when there is intent around when these two meet let alone when they don’t.

The last four matches they’ve played have had 64, 70, 63 and 62pts so quite where a 50pt line comes from for this match heaven only knows. Wakefield recently stuck 30pts on Catalans here so I’m expecting Castleford to so similar and that should see this 50pt line obliterated.
