Super League XXIII Magic Weekend – Wigan Warriors vs Warrington Wolves Betting Preview

Two form sides of the Super League meet in the second match of the opening day of the Magic Weekend when Wigan Warriors take on Warrington Wolves in a battle between second and third in the table heading into the extravaganza.

These two sides are on lengthy runs of wins but something is going to have to give in the wide open expanse of St James’ Park in what may well turn out to be the match of the entire weekend despite being the middle match on Saturday.

Wigan Warriors

After a disastrous campaign by their standards last term the Wigan Warriors are certainly making up for that this time around and they sit second in the Super League table going into the Magic Weekend. They are two points behind St Helens in the table but they have a gme in hand which may well be significant.

Unlike in previous years I like the way this Wigan side attack. They have a couple of creative half backs and are as potent as any side in the competition in the wider areas. As is the tradition of the Warriors they have a big, powerful but mobile pack who lay an excellent foundation for their attacking players to do their thing.

Warrington Wolves

The Warrington Wolves had a season to forget last time around too and after taking a couple of weeks to get up to speed this term they have now won their last 10 matches and will be looking for a magical eleventh success in this match. They go into the game off the back of what turned out to be a very easy Challenge Cup win last week.

In that match their attack ran riot but what has impressed me is how much the Wolves have improved defensively as well as in attack. In fairness they’ve always had playmakers in attack but sometimes they have been found wanting in defence. The Aussie influence in their Head Coach has completely changed all that.

Team News

Wigan Warriors will be without their captain Sean O’Loughlin for this match and they might also be without George Williams who is a doubt through injury too. Morgan Escare is back in the squad which might be significant.

Steve Price has named the same Warrington Wolves squad that powered past the Toronto Wolfpack last weekend and he might well send his side into battle with the same starting 17 too.

Betting

Wigan Warriors go into this match as the favourites to come out on top but it is the Warrington Wolves that I like here, especially with Sean O’Loughlin out. If George Williams doesn’t play either that is two key players missing for the Warriors which is less than ideal it must be said.

Warrington are on an excellent run of form at the minute and they have already beaten Wigan this season. I think they can match up with power up the middle and with the quality they have in the wider areas I fancy the Wolves will just edge what should be an absolutely cracking second encounter of the day.
