Preview

The race to host a semi-final will be under the televised spotlight on Friday night when the Wigan Warriors host the Castleford Tigers in a match which sees second taking on third. Warrington Wolves can really strengthen their top four hopes when they host the Catalans Dragons who will be buoyed from their Challenge Cup semi-final win while it is must win for Hull FC and Wakefield Trinity when they meet at the KCOM. It is also must win for the Huddersfield Giants when they head across the Pennines to take on a wounded St Helens side. In the qualifiers Hull KR and Salford Red Devils will be looking to make a winning start in their quest to retain Super League status.

Betting

I’ll take three over the course of the night with the first of those being in the Castleford Tigers in what I see as a fairly even match between themselves and the Wigan Warriors. If anything the pressure is all on Wigan here with them being at home and expected to secure a home semi-final. Over the last 12-18 months or so these are exactly the sort of matches that Castleford up their game for. Castleford have won five of their last six meetings with Wigan and look good value to make that six of seven.

In the Challenge Cup final rehearsal I like the Warrington Wolves to cover a dozen points against the Catalans Dragons. If Catalans are anything close to full strength then they might have been a great bet but Steve McNamara has chosen to rest Josh Drinkwater, Tony Gigot, Benjamin Jullien, Sam Moas, Louis Anderson, Julian Bousquet and Lewis Tierney. That’s a lot of talent on the sidelines so Warrington to cover the dozen looks a decent bet to me.

In the match in the qualifiers I think Hull KR can safely cover a converted try. They finished the regular season in excellent touch and with Todd Carney in situ now I’m expecting them to have no problems preserving their Super League status. There is so much pressure on the Salford Red Devils over the next few weeks that I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if they pick and choose matches to focus on. This is one they can afford to lose so they might save their efforts for another day. Whether they do or they don’t Rovers are in good form and can continue that here.
