Super League XXIII Super 8s – Saturday 18th August Matches Betting Preview

It is a big day in the Super League on Saturday with both the Super 8s and the qualifiers under the spotlight in what feels like it could be a breakthrough day with dramatic effects on a number of sides in action.

That feeling is heightened by the fact that Sky Sports are televising three of the four matches live as the story of who will and who won’t be playing Super League next season begins to get a little clearer.

Super 8s

There is only the one match in the Super 8s on Saturday but for the Wigan Warriors it is a pretty big one it has to be said. They head to France to take on the Catalans Dragons knowing they could do with a win to avoid being dragged into a bun fight for a home semi-final later in the campaign. For Catalans, their season is now all about next Saturday and the Challenge Cup final given that they have secured their Super League status.

Qualifiers

There are three matches in the qualifiers on Saturday, two of which are on TV. The first of those sees Salford Red Devils taking on Widnes Vikings. Having lost to London Broncos last week, Widnes have to win one of their three matches against Super League sides to have any chance of maintaining their status. Salford took a massive stride towards playing top flight rugby next season when they beat Hull KR last week and a win here will consolidate that position.

Later in the day there are a couple of matches on foreign soil with Toulouse taking on Halifax away from the TV cameras and then a huge game for Hull KR when they cross the seas to take on the Toronto Wolfpack in a match the Robins really need to win after dropping a game last weekend.

Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets across the course of the day here. The first of those comes from the Super 8s match where although the Catalans Dragons have recalled a number of their squad who were rested last week, I still think the Wigan Warriors will edge home. Although I took Warrington on Friday night I feared they would have an eye on the cup final and ultimately that is how it played out and I sense the same could happen to Catalans here especially with them having nothing to play for in the Super League. I don’t think the Dragons will want to go to Wembley off the back of another hiding so I expect a performance from Catalans but the extra class of Wigan can see them win by a 1-12 point margin.

Later in the day I think the Toronto Wolfpack are good things. If this was in Hull I might think differently but the Wolfpack are very good on their own patch, unsurprisingly given the travelling and time change the visitors have to endure when they go there. Toronto can play too though. Their success is very much down to their on field exploits as well as the advantages they have before the whistle blows. Hull KR are without Todd Carney and Maurice Blair here which are big misses and through the likes of Ashton Sims, Olsi Krasniqi and Cory Paterson the Wolfpack can make the metres to see up the likes of Ryan Brierley, Matty Russsell and Liam Kay to run up enough points to win the match.
