Super League XXIII – Widnes Vikings vs Salford Red Devils Betting Preview

The last round of Super League matches prior to Easter gets going on Thursday night when two sides heavily tipped to struggle over the course of the campaign do battle when the Widnes Vikings host the Salford Red Devils.

Both sides go into the contest with two wins to their name for the season so whoever wins this one will give themselves a little bit of breathing space heading into the busy Easter period next weekend.

Widnes Vikings

It has been an up and down campaign for the Widnes side to date. They have won a couple of matches and lost four others and then saw their match against Wakefield Trinity abandoned after 20 minutes or so last week when the snow put paid to any chances of completing the game. With that in mind they could do with a win, especially here when they are at home.

Widnes are actually scoring plenty of points this season which is a positive. Only the top two in the table have scored more points than them but only the bottom four have conceded more which is where their real issue lies. If they can sort out their defensive instability then there is every chance they will be fine.

Salford Red Devils

I guess the real problem with the Salford Red Devils is that you never truly know what is going on with them both on and off the field and it must be hard to do anything with consistency when that is the case. With that in mind the fact they have managed a couple of wins in this campaign should be recognised as acceptable.

The Red Devils come into this match in good form after beating Hull FC out of sight last week and having set that standard their quest now is to maintain that. If they can do that then as we saw last season they are capable of picking up results. They defended brilliantly last week and need to continue to be as strong in that department.

Team News

Widnes have named the same squad as they used for the abandoned match last weekend. That makes the likes of Rhys Hanbury and Krisnan Inu key players for the Vikings.

Salford Red Devils have named Ryan Lannon in their squad and he is in line for a seasonal debut while Derrell Olpherts is also in the squad. He could play for the first time since joining the club last year.

Betting

I don’t think there is a whole lot between these two sides and ultimately I think the team that prevails could be the one that defends the best. I think Salford Red Devils are better equipped in that department and at odds against I think they are the value in the match.

They go into the contest off the back of a good win last week so they may well feel a little more positive about things at the minute. This is a big game for both sides and we saw last season that Salford can handle these sort of occasions. I’ll side with them in this one.
