Super League XXIV Magic Weekend – Hull FC vs Huddersfield Giants Betting Preview

The second match of the Magic Weekend sees Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants colliding in the Anfield sunshine on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking for the two points to propel themselves up the table.

Both sides enjoyed good wins last weekend to boost their form heading to the big weekend and whoever escapes with the two points here should feel good about themselves for the remainder of the regular campaign.

Hull FC

I wouldn’t have thought even too many Hull FC fans would have expected to see their side go to Warrington last weekend and come away with the victory but to their credit that is exactly what happened. Hull FC haven’t been the most consistent side this season but that victory saw them soar up to fourth in the table and they will hope that they haven’t stopped there. There is a lot of big match pedigree in this side which bodes well here.

The Black and Whites have won three and lost two of their last five in Super League, although the defeats were to two of the top three in the form of St Helens and Catalans Dragons and it is no shame to lose to them. Their defence caved in during both of those matches and that is something they obvious need to avoid the longer the season goes on if they are to stay in the top five.

Huddersfield Giants

After a more encouraging campaign last term, the Huddersfield Giants will be disappointed to be sat in ninth position heading into the Magic Weekend. They did enjoy a good win over Hull KR last weekend though which should serve them well as they look to take care of the other half of the city of Hull in the vast surroundings of Anfield. They will hope the big pitch works to their advantage.

Prior to that victory, the Giants had lost three of their previous four matches, with their only success in that time coming against the London Broncos, which probably isn’t the strongest form guide it has to be said. Despite their slow start to the season, a win here could move them into the top eight and they would have the platform to launch an assault on the top five, although whether they are good enough for that remains to be seen.

Team News

Josh Bowden could make his return for Hull FC in this match after recovering from an ACL injury which has kept him out of the game for a year. On the flip side of that they will be without Jack Logan who is recovering from surgery on his elbow. Danny Houghton is expected to play.

Alex Mellor is being reintroduced into the Huddersfield Giants squad for this encounter in what is the only change for Simon Woolford as he looks to guide his side to successive wins which could set up their season.

Betting

Both these sides had encouraging wins last week but you would have to recognise that there was a lot more merit to the Hull FC win over Warrington than the Huddersfield victory over a Hull KR side who look in a little bit of freefall at the minute and if we take those form lines I think we come out with a Hull FC win here. The question then comes whether we think Hull will cover a converted try.

Five of their last six wins have come by more than six points with the only one not to being their win in France and just winning there is a good result. Huddersfield Giants still have plenty of big players out for them and although they are just about coping without them this big pitch could catch them out. I respect the Giants’ wonderful Magic record but I have to take them on here and will go with Hull FC to cover six points.
