Super League XXIX – Saturday 7th September Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The huge Super League XXIX weekend continues on Saturday when another two massive matches take place in the competition as four more sides who are looking to finish the campaign in a big way take to the pitch.

As ever this season, both of the matches will be live on TV for us to enjoy so there is certainly no reason not to sit back with our feet up and what should be an outstanding day of rugby league given the desperation for the two points.

Warrington Wolves vs St Helens (15.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Sports Action)

The opening match of the Super Saturday of action comes from the Halliwell Jones Stadium as the Warrington Wolves looks to continue their hunt for a top two finish when they host a St Helens side whose spot in the playoffs has suddenly come under huge threat.

With Leigh Leopards and Leeds Rhinos having won on Friday night, St Helens have suddenly been surrounded by teams and so they could really do with a win here to give themselves a little bit of breathing space for the remainder of the season. Warrington will be playing in the first week of the playoffs if they lose here so there is no shortage of things at stake in this match. I would ordinarily be looking at Warrington to win this match but the suspension of Paul Vaughan is just one big name too many missing. I have no interest in being with St Helens in their current state though so this is a pretty easy match to skip from a betting point of view.

Salford Red Devils vs Catalans Dragons (17.30 – BBC 2 & Sky Sports+)

The second match on Saturday is a massive one in the race for the playoffs as the two sides who are immediately below the playoff line after the Friday matches meet when the Salford Red Devils play host to the Catalans Dragons.

A Salford win here will move them back into the top six and they would remain in control of their own destiny while a Dragons win would see them move level on points with Leeds Rhinos and Salford for the final playoff spot so everything really is on the line in this one. It isn’t pushing it too far to suggest that whoever loses this match won’t make the top six at the end of the season so both might well be treating this one as a knockout match. I like the Red Devils here. Their home record is really strong at the minute. They have won their last six home matches and eight of their last nine. The only team to have left Salford with the points this season are Wigan who have done it twice but they are the best team in the competition so there is no shame in that. Catalans have never completely convincing on their travels and a couple of away games ago they lost to London Broncos which doesn’t bode well here. Salford have a near full squad to choose from which is important here and while Catalans injury list is easing you wonder how much of that is down to them forcing key players to play because of the situation they are in. I’m a little surprised that Salford are only being asked to cover four points here and I’m happy to back them to do it.
