Super League XXVII – Friday 2nd September Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The final round of the Super League regular season gets underway on Friday evening when two matches take place in the competition. Three of the top four sides are on show over the course of the night but in terms of a competitive edge there isn’t much on these games.

One of the two games is live on the TV for us in the UK to enjoy. If you would like updates on the other game I’m sure the TV coverage will provide it but other than the locality of the two sides there isn’t a great deal on it. The TV game is the second to kick off but we’ll begin the preview with it.

Wigan Warriors vs Catalans Dragons (20.00 – Sky Sports Arena)

The marquee match of the night is the one which sees the Wigan Warriors host the Catalans Dragons in a clash which pits the last two beaten Grand Final teams against each other in a clash which could easily be repeated in the postseason later this month.

This looked a good game on paper but Steve McNamara has quite rightly taken the decision to rest pretty much all of his senior players knowing full well that he has a play-off game to negotiate next week. That will leave his side exposed to a Wigan side who rested everyone on Monday and who recall almost all of their main squad for what will be their last game for two weeks. That leaves the only question here of how many Wigan will win by and bookmakers have subsequently adjusted the handicap to around 46 points. In a game which carries no competitive edge I’m not interested in working out the likely winners with that start imposed but if Wigan are going to go close to it then you would imagine Bevan French will fill his boots, having scored 29 times in 26 matches this season. That includes a brace against St Helens last week and a hat trick against Toulouse the week before while we still remember the seven he scored against Hull FC. With Liam Farrell absent I would imagine most of the work will go down the right for Wigan here so although I wouldn’t call 12/5 on French to score a hat trick value I think it has a good chance of landing.

Huddersfield Giants vs Wakefield Trinity (19.45)

The match away from the cameras sees the third placed team Huddersfield Giants taking on their local rivals Wakefield Trinity in a clash which both teams are really only playing for pride and some form for next week in the case of the home side.

Ian Watson has not gone down the Steve McNamara route and rested everyone but he is sitting three key forwards out of this match knowing that his team will be playing knockout rugby next Saturday. Wakefield are safe after a fine flourish to finish their season and unless they are intent on sending the raft of players that are leaving after this match off with a win they aren’t really playing for a whole lot. I suspect with both teams having played twice in little over a week intensity will be short in supply in this match and with nothing really on it I’m happy to leave this one alone.
