The penultimate round of matches in the Super League regular season concludes on Monday when the remaining five games are played out throughout the competition as teams look to either seal or enhance their play-off spots.
We actually have two matches of the five to enjoy on the TV throughout the day on Monday and I’m sure there will be regular updates throughout the TV coverage in the other three, even though there is no huge competitive edge on them.
Monday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated, UK TV in brackets)
Huddersfield Giants v Warrington Wolves
Hull Kingston Rovers v Wigan Warriors
St Helens v Wakefield Trinity
Castleford Tigers v Salford Red Devils (3.30pm – Sky Sports Arena)
Catalans Dragons v Leeds Rhinos (6pm – Sky Sports Arena)

The two televised matches carry so much on them as the race for the top six escalates. We now know that the last two places in the play-offs will be filled by two of three teams and those sides are all involved in the TV matches on Monday. The first of those sees Castleford Tigers in seventh playing host to Salford Red Devils who start the day in sixth place. When they are done the fifth placed Leeds Rhinos could book their spot in the postseason when they head to France to take on Catalans Dragons.
The League Leaders’ Shield is the prize on the line for St Helens on Monday afternoon. They play host to a Wakefield Trinity side who aren’t playing for anything knowing that a win will secure their top spot in the table. Should they lose that match then Wigan Warriors could take the race for the Shield down to the final day when they go to Hull KR. They would need to beat the Robins for that to happen though. The other match comes from the John Smith’s Stadium where Huddersfield Giants welcome Warrington Wolves.
Betting
I’m the first to hold my hands up and admit that I got the Salford Red Devils all wrong last week but I’m not going to make that mistake again here. Castleford Tigers haven’t really impressed me much for a while and although they got me a win against the Warrington Wolves last week there was a sense that they fell over the line in that match and having to go the full 80 won’t have done them much good with such a short turnaround either.
We know this is basically a knockout match for the top six but I think Salford come into this one in the better form and their style is such that teams can get tired trying to defend them very quickly. Castleford might have some heavy legs after the other night anyway and chasing this Red Devils side who give the ball some air more than any team in the league could soon become pretty energy sapping. Form and style fits Salford here as does the short turnaround and at odds against they look a great bet here.
